By and large, the Astro A20s impress. They sound great, fit very comfortably, and I had no issues with the wireless signal or set up. This headset may not hit the highest highs of sound quality as the Astro A50s do, but at half the price, they’re a very…

Detail Review:

INTRODUCTION:

Astro A20

With the mid-range price and great features and also with good sound quality, this headset works very well. Even though the price is not too much like higher-end headsets, this works very well for gaming.

Steelseries Arctis 7

This is a gaming headset that costs 150 pounds is fully wireless and has virtual surround sound. While it’s definitely not the absolute best sounding headset I’ve ever heard, it is actually the best gaming headset I have ever tested and the reason for this is because, for starters, it’s amazingly well built.

DESIGN:

Astro A20

As you might expect, the A20 is in between the A10 and A30 and that product range. Now that means is that you don’t really get older like super fancy customization pads on the side or different ear cups, you’re stuck with what you buy but you do still get build quality.

It is a bit plasticky which makes the unit feel a bit cheaper than for the price but the use of all the soft-touch plastics and the rubber means that it’s just very flexible. So, it won’t break if you accidentally sit on it or if you throw it away when you’re ragequitting. Overall build quality is actually pretty good.

Steelseries Arctis 7

It doesn’t feel cheap in any way, in fact, everything about it maybe bar the hinge on the 90 degrees swiveling ear cups is pretty much everything I’d want it to be.

It’s very strong, it looks very good and it’s very nice to the touch with the top band being made of aluminum but it has a sort of self-adjusting strap that can be removed if you don’t like the design. This means that whenever you put it on your head, it’s going to automatically adjust to your head size without any real issue at all and unlike on something like the Hyperx Cloud Revolver. You don’t get any horrible clunky noise if you ever touch the headset carried through to your ear cups.

COMFORT:

Astro A20

In my opinion, comfort is the most important aspect of a headset. You’ll be wearing this thing for 10-12 hours on end if you’re going for really long gaming sessions or productivity sessions because it’s okay for that. The Astro A20 gets most things right in terms of comfort. So, the headband itself has a step-less adjustment, so it fits on any head sizes and it also fits on smaller heads.

Clamping force despite a head size steaks okay. So, it’s not going to clamp your ears too hard and the ear cups are made of very breathable, very plush soft materials like your heads getting hugs from both sides. It’s actually quite a nice feeling and slight negative is the headband itself, it’s very narrow and the padding on there combined with the rubber actually means that it like pulls your hair ever so slightly and it’s a pressure point as well on top of your head and that can create a few hot spots. So, I would really like just to get the same materials from the ear cups on top of the headband, although that might then make it slide around more.

Steelseries Arctis 7

The earpads take on an oval shape which fits nicely around my ears. It creates a nice seal and it doesn’t become overly hot either, thanks to the fact that it uses a cloth finish rather than faux leather that’s found on some the headset. The combination of a small amount of gripping force on your head that’s tight enough, so it doesn’t wobble but not overly tight means that it’s not uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time because it uses clasp it means that it doesn’t get overly hot either.

I worked for about 3 to 4 hours with this headset, I never sort of felt straining against my head even as a glasses wearer, I found these things incredibly comfortable to wear which is exactly what you want from a headset because chances are you are going to be wearing them for a very long time.

FEATURES:

Astro A20

There are two versions in the headset of A20 which is going to be incredibly similar and both versions also work on PC. Now at this $150 price point, you do expect to get at least a few accessories in the box. In this box, you get a bit of cable so that’s for your optical audio when you connect it to your Xbox and then there are also two USB cables. One of them connects to the included little box and this is of course the transmitter box and then from there, you can also charge the headphone itself. Also, you can just charge it with your phone charger. The battery life, Astro rated at 15 hours and they’re basically spot-on battery life is 15 hours with this one.

The transmitter box itself is a very small bit and shiny plastic on there. On the front is an LED to show you that you’re connected. On the back is a total to switch between inputs, so Xbox optical or USB PC and that’s all you get.

Now being a wireless headset, it actually runs on the 5 gigahertz band so that means you won’t really get interference from extra Wi-Fi. So, sound quality should be the same no matter when as long as you’re in range. The range is actually pretty limited, there is no problem if you are in the same room but when you go to another room or any other place far from that room, it loses connection.

Now with wireless headsets, you also need control over the headset and all the controls are on the right ear cup. So, on the top there is the power button which will obviously turn it on or off but it will also turn itself off if you haven’t been using it for quite some time just to save battery power, it’ll turn itself off which is a nice feature as long as you remember to turn it back on when you start using it again. Below that button is the equalizer button, now this equalizer button has three presets free programs but you can create your own presets through the Astro commander software.

The feature that made Astro gaming famous is the ability to change volume levels independently between voices. So, people talking in your TeamSpeak, you can basically change between your teammates talking and the game audio, and for that on the bottom, there are also two buttons you can make the voices louder or you can make the music louder. In between there, there’s a volume dial and I think this is probably the worst placement for volume dial ever. When you wear anything with a hood or just a higher color what tends to happen is the volume wheel will actually rub on your collor whenever you look to the side and so, you’ll be adjusting the audio levels without really wanting to.

Steelseries Arctis 7

You controlling the headset is done with the controls on the left and right-hand side of the ear cups. You can do things like adjusting the volume, the microphone volume, mute the microphone, and you’ve also got a jack for charging it because this is, of course, a wireless headset as well as a jack that you can use to convert this into a wired headset if you’re using something like an Xbox that doesn’t support the USB features of this headset.

Connecting this to your PC is done with a USB cable. You’ve got an adapter that’s slightly larger than something like the ManO’war which is tiny and tucks away into that headset. The advantage here is that it’s got a very neat party trick but if you’re using a three-and-a-half millimeter jack for your speakers then if you plug them into the headset receiver whenever your headset is on, then it will automatically route the sound to your headset. If as you turn off it will go back to the speakers. Features like this that are genuinely great for gamers rather than something like RGB which SteelSeries do Arctis 5, there are just completely irrelevant features and just aren’t worth your time or day.

In terms of wireless range, you can go outside the room a little bit but I think that’s pretty much the furthest for anyone is going to go with their headset. In terms of battery life, it’s rated for over 20 hours, I think it’s going close to 24 hours. If you want to charge this every week or two, I think you’re going to be absolutely fine and won’t be running into any issues.

MICROPHONE:

Astro A20

Voices are pretty clear but it’s obviously not a professional studio microphone. It’s good enough though to have conversations with your teammates for example. I would like it to be slightly louder but it actually does a really good job of keeping away background noise.

Steelseries Arctis 7

The microphone is retractable, so while you can’t remove it entirely, it’s very unobtrusive and it won’t get in your way. It’s very moldable as well and I really like the fact that it has a red LED on the end which activates whenever you meet the microphone. Then, you’re not going to embarrass yourself by talking to your friends when they can’t hear.

As for the microphone on the headset itself, I have to say actually it’s very impressive. The background noise cancellation does a very good job of working. There isn’t a pop filter though which can sort of mean that your sounds will come across quite harsh but it’s not very nasally which is actually quite unusual for a headset like this and it’s more than good enough for everything.

SOUND:

Astro A20

This is an aspect that really surprised me actually. It has Xbox branding and gaming on there, so usually, that means it’s gonna have horrible sound quality but the A20 really surprised me. It actually sounds really good. In the Astro command center, you can just create your own equalizer and share it with your friends or download and equalize it from some prose to really get the best sound out of it. You really have to do that because standards profiles are just way too bass-heavy and even adjusting it to a flat equalizer, it’s still a little bit bass-heavy but it’s not too much and the bass is quite crisp as well.

The overall sound is a bit v-shaped even with a flat EQ, so that means voices are very clear and it’s also very clear to know where gunshots are coming from. I would really like a slightly more supportive mid-range and you can do that through the equalizer again but you do start losing quality in the mid-range when you start messing with that equalizer too much.

Now, being a closed-back headset so that means the driver is completely sealed from the outsides. It gives you okay sound isolation, so you won’t hear what’s going on around you too much but remember it is still a mesh ear cup. So, it’s not going to completely lock every noise out there and being closed back, this sound stage is also rather limited. Now, this is a bit of an issue to me when listening to music but when gaming, it was actually okay I could very easily figure out where my enemies were.

If you get a good stereo headset, you can get equally good soundstage and positional audio. So that’s really nice, it actually does a really good job.

Steelseries Arctis 7

For the audio quality, I’ve been very impressed. For listening to music, this headset is a little bit tricky as a lot of them are quite bass-heavy and a lot of them aren’t really great at retaining the details in the mids, and while this still doesn’t sound as good as a dedicated pair of headphones. The low-end isn’t particularly powerful but you can adjust this in the EQ if you do prefer that but nothing really ever gets particularly muddy, I can very clearly hear the vocals as well as the instrument in the background.

As far as the highs concerned, nothing really ever gets overly sharp. As far as gaming is concerned, the majority of my testing has actually been done over on the PlayStation 4 this time on the ps4 pro, and games like Horizon Zero Dawn really do like to sort of immersing you. This gives an open-world game and having decent audio is actually quite a large portion of the experience. I was able to listen to some of the soundtracks and sort of properly discover them that I hadn’t really noticed before when using speakers.

It’s not quite as punchy as some others. I think that having a tonal range that is accurately recreated for the headset without any real muddiness in the mid-range is something I’d much rather have from a headset rather than something that favors safe at the cost of other sorts of sound effects.

WHICH TO BUY?

Both these headsets are good at their prices. It is quite difficult to get a decision on which to buy in both these headsets. If you are only into gaming and ant any good headset for that at mid-range then Astro A20 will be great. If you want that headset for gaming, work, and also for music then Steelseries Arctis 7 will be good. Even though it will not be great for music like Sennheiser, it will be great in overall quality like gaming, music, and some work.
