Detail Review

INTRODUCTION:

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

This is the new Surface Pro 6 from Microsoft and it has received 2 big changes First one is a CPU upgrade this year, they’ve gone to 8th gen CPUs, and the other is an aesthetic change, now it has a black option and that’s something that people have been looking for a while. There’s a lot of stuff that hasn’t changed on this device.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

This is a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 which boasts a serious performance boost and a bit of aspect of grid over the previous generation. It’s the latest version of the tablet in the Surface Pro line up.

DESIGN & DISPLAY:

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

It’s got the same screen, it’s a beautiful screen. The bezels are present, but it’s kind of necessary for a product like this. It’s running Windows 10 and because of the operating system, I do feel like it needs some bezels on the Surface Pro line up. The keyboard, trackpad, and the pen input haven’t changed, great inputs. I’ve never had any real issues with them.

Now, this comes in a black finish and it looks really nice. Unfortunately, it scuffs easily, any kind of contact with a hard material has a chance to scratch or scuff that black material and it’ll show because it’s a matte black. If you’re gonna pick up a matte black surface, I highly recommend picking up a black skin to protect it. It basically looks like a regular product. It’s just got some protection.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

This hasn’t exactly been a huge amount of change for this latest iteration as far as design goes. The Surface Pro 7 is still an impressively slender metal device considering all the smarts packed inside, even if those screen bezels aren’t as skinny as the sexy new premium Surface Pro X.

The surface pro 7 is deftly a great way to taking a digital mag, bit Netflix on the go but if you try to work in the same way as the laptop works, it will be that much comfortable, I mean on your lap. It works but it’s not as comfortable as a proper laptop. The brilliance of the Surface Pro 7 is the fact that you can convert it into that tablet-style format when you are on the move and it’s an absolute joy to use.

I did enjoy as always working on that 12.3-inch display which is crisp and pleasingly punchy. It’s not an OLED panel sadly and there’s no dedicated edge to your support but those contrast levels are pretty impressive. You’ll really notice it when you’re watching a movie or Netflix with finer details appearing in those darker areas. You also get over 400 nits on top brightness levels as well which is perfect for working outdoors, while 2736 by 1824 pixel resolution keeps your visuals pin sharp. However, while the Surface Pro 7 can be relied on to dependably pump out some nice vivid hues, unfortunately, the color accuracy is rather lackluster compared with rivals such as Dell. So, only 90% of the SRGB gamut and around 60 percent of the Adobe RGB gamut are reliably and accurately covered off.

SPECIFICATIONS & PERFORMANCE:

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

The pricing is better this year. It starts at 900 dollars at the base model, but you’re getting eight gigs of ram and four-core CPU. So, the product feels like a much better and longer-lasting product than last year’s surface pro.

It’s got the same kickstand which has an unlimited position, so you can fold it back pretty far and that just gives this product a ton of diversity and utility. These speakers look to be unchanged, they’re in a good spot. They’re usable both in tablet mode and the laptop mode, they sound clean. The ports however have also not changed.

The drive on this is the upgraded one. So, it’s a 256 GB drive, it’s an NVME and it performs really well, the 256 upgraded one is pretty fast. The CPU is also been upgraded, so this year it’s running 8th gen Intel CPUs and these units running the i5 and it’s fanless which is a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you’re looking for. So, this thing is silent, a lot of people are looking for that quiet workspace and this gives you that a fanless quad-core i5 is really nice to work with. However, it can get warm and it never gets burning hot. A fanless i5 is gonna throttle in certain applications if you push it hard enough. So, stuff like video editing or photo editing large files can have issues on this particular device.

Gaming also isn’t great, it’s running a UHD 620 which is nothing crazy but light games will run on this device but anything even moderately demanding isn’t gonna perform well because that GPU isn’t particularly powerful. The strange thing is that last year’s model like the 2017 Surface Pro, that top-end model had a slightly more powerful GPU than this year’s top model. Now, a lot of the workflows that are going to be happening on a Surface Pro product are going to be more CPU dependent than GPU dependent, but for the people that wanted a more powerful GPU kind of missed out this year.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

As usual, you’ve got a micro SD memory card slot tucked away to expand the 128 GB to one terabyte of storage. I definitely recommend the official Microsoft Surface keyboards. This helps to protect at the Surface Pro 7’s display when you’re hitting the road and of course, converts it into a makeshift laptop or when needed. The ever trusty kickstand which can be pulled out the back end, it’s perfectly engineered so you can open it to almost any angle go on and it’s just the right level of stiff as well to effortlessly support that display.

I actually like the surface keyboard which has actual proper push buttons that move when you smash it unlike alternatives from Apple. Those keys are a respectable size too, the arrow keys aren’t obnoxiously cramped in the corner while our return key gets to full rolls to breathe and you even get a proper bit of backlight and so you can work through the night. The laptop-style setup is all well and good. If you’re actually traveling about the place and it’s less than convenient unless you’re using it in the tablet mode.

It’s not as light as an iPad at almost 800 grams but it is comfortable enough to hold, thanks to those wide bezels and those touch controls work perfectly. So, browsing the web, playing around with documents whatever is an absolute delight as always you can get busy with the optional surface stylus as well for a proper bit of precision. There’s no dedicated storage place for that stylus on the Surface Pro 7 though unlike on the more premium Surface Pro X but at least the magnetic connection holding the stylus onto the side of the pro 7 is pretty damn strong.

The audio output isn’t too special either. On top of the volume, you’ll have no worries watch your Netflix in a noisy area but that sound which has pumped out of these narrow gaps in the edge is rather flat, definitely not great for music. Thankfully, you do have a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the edge and a reliable bit of Bluetooth 5 support as well when you do want to connect some phones. There is a 5-megapixel front-facing web camera, it’s neatly positioned right in the center just above the display, absolutely perfect for all of your Skype sessions at everything.

On the performance, things get a bit complicated. As you can grab the Surface Pro 7 with a wide variety of different internals. Thankfully, all of the new skews bought a 10th gen Intel isolate platform. So, even the most basic setups packet decent bit of grunt. The entry-level Surface Pro 7 comes packing a core i3 platform backed by 4 GB of RAM but if you want a Core i5 or even a core i7, you’ll definitely have to spunk up quite a bit more cash. I’ve got smooth results no matter what I was up to even when you try video editing, games with some graphics, the Surface Pro 7 was generally up to it. More demanding game and titles did understandably struggle even on lower detail levels, while the strange brigade benchmark and regularly churned out scores under 30fps but if you temper your expectations and limit yourself to older or less GPU intensive games, you will be just fine.

The storage is suitably quick as well. The Core i7 version of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 actually boasts an internal form that just helps to keep that warm air moving out via the edge-mounted vents prevent the chassis from warming up too much, seems pretty reliable, and dependable. You can’t really hear the fans unless you’re in a whisper-quiet room.

BATTERY:

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

This is a device that still does not have a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 port. In their defense, If you were gonna have a USB-C port on this device, you would probably replace the surface connector which is what they’re using to charge it and to date, I have not seen a product out there that has a well-functioning magnetic USB-C charging system. Without USB-C or Thunderbolt 3, it really limits the full potential of this device because there are tablets out there that do have Thunderbolt 3 connectivity.

Battery life hasn’t changed. You may get around eight or eight and a half hours and the AC adapters also unchanged, it still has that used to be port on the side which I’ve always liked, but the overall product is an upgrade depending on your workflow. Like, if you’re doing multi-core heavy stuff that can take advantage of that 8th Gen CPU, then this is awesome. I feel like the product overall hasn’t changed, that missing USB-C port or Thunderbolt 3 port, particularly a Thunderbolt 3 port would have been really nice and would have completely changed my opinion of the surface lineup in general.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

The selection of ports is still unsurprisingly limited but you do get some tasty new type-c USB action along sides that full-size USB port for hooking up wide peripherals.

In the battery life area, the iPad Pro is still the king but I did find that I got around 6 hours of mixed-use from a full charge. With most of that time spent working in Chrome, while streaming music and if you are doing some gaming or anything intensive like that, you can expect that figure to drop somewhat. When you are traveling abroad, don’t forget to pack the proprietary Microsoft Surface Pro charger as well. I could keep this tablet powered up using the type-c USB port but whenever you travel abroad, unfortunately, those lower voltage power points did not support sometimes.

WHICH TO BUY?

Both the tablets are from the same lineup. Both the tablet has some little differences which may make a huge performance difference. In my opinion, the upgraded one Microsoft Surface Pro 7 will be better to buy because it has some differences which will make the performance better.

In Microsoft Surface Pro 7, there’s actually not a huge incrementation over the previous generation apart from where the performance is concerned. Definitely a very solid or on a tablet that current vertical convenience is definitely the major draw in fact for this thing. If you want something that’s going to convert into a tablet quickly and easily with zero effort or whatsoever, this will get the job done.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is still the best detachable 2-in-1 around with a beautiful display and solid battery life, but its port selection is stuck in the past and its storage should be faster.

“The Surface Pro 6 is the most refined product of Microsoft’s vision for the future of portable computing. By correcting a few small flaws, the Surface could be the perfect Windows machine”

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 6 is a light and portable 2-in-1 with a decent display that’s ideal for office work and streaming.

The small difference in application performance raises the question whether or not the i7 model is really worth its high premium. Performance junkies will profit from the i7, which turned out to be 22% faster under sustained load.

By Techadvisor
With an upgrade to the latest 8th-gen Intel processors, all Surface Pro 6 models get a decent performance boost but it’s hard to find any other changes from the previous two generations. That’s not a bad thing – unless you need a USB-C port – and it’s still a good buy if you’re after a Windows 10 tablet that also works as a laptop.
