DESIGN

Huawei MateBook 13:

Starting with the outside here, we have Huawei’s typical space gray color, and it works pretty well. Regarding the logo, they did change it up, it used to be mirrored, now it’s sort of grippy and has this nice kind of cool reflective effect to it. It’s still nice but I don’t love their logo.

Dell XPS 13:

Dell XPS 13 is incredibly nice-looking. It’s small, compact, lightweight. My model is black carbon fiber. There’s something about the way that Dell does their very unique carbon fiber, it’s soft to the touch and durable.

WEIGHT & DIMENSIONS

Huawei MateBook 13:

1.3 kg of weight and dimension is (11.3 x 8.3 x 0.6) inches. It is thick laptop.

Dell XPS 13:

Dimension of the Dell XPS 13 is nearly (11.98 x 7.88) deep. Weight is almost 1.27 kg.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD

Huawei MateBook 13:

There is no difference between the 2017 MateBook X and 2019 MateBook X. The only big difference is there are no speakers behind the keyboard which is one of the big selling points of the MateBook X.

The keyboard has the edge to edge design, about 1.2 millimeters for travel, back-lit, and really good typing. I’ve had no issues with the typing experience.

On the power button, you do get a fingerprint reader built-in, so that’s your Windows hello.

The size of the trackpad is good, it’s pretty large, definitely larger than the 2017 MateBook X. It’s glass, it’s smooth, and it’s precision. No complaints with the clicking either.

Dell XPS 13:

Keyboard and Trackpad on this device remains unchanged. I’ve been like both things on the XPS device. The trackpad is glass surface window precision, it is also old-style at the terms of the size.

PORT SELECTION

Huawei MateBook 13:

On the left hand side, you’re not gonna get a lot of choice here for I/O. You do get USB type C for charging, as well as a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, and there’s a little LED to let you know it’s charging as well.

On the right hand side, you just get another USB type C port.

Looking at the bottom, it’s pretty clean designed. You do have the intakes here as well as a couple fans with their new Shark Fin 2.0.

Dell XPS 13:

Ports on Dell XPS 13, device are okay. It makes sense that, 3 USB-C and one Micro-SD slot. There is no USB-A for the people looking for robust port selection.

On the left side USB-C support Thunderbolt 3. It also include dongle, but as it is never convenient.

DISPLAY

Huawei MateBook 13:

It’s 13.3 inches, 2160×1440 or 200 PPI. It’s a nice display. You’ll get these really thin bezels. This is the same display that was found in 2017’s Matebook X. The big difference though is this year this is now a touchscreen. The touchscreen does not support a pen.

This does keep the webcam at the top and it’s a one megapixel. It’s an all right shooter, nothing crazy, and you get a little sensor for the auto-brightness of the display.

I have to point this out Huawei is very aggressive with their auto-display brightness, meaning it tends to be a darker screen than I think most people would prefer. It will preserve your battery life, but you’ll probably wanna disable that if you don’t like the way they aggressively use screen brightness.

Dell XPS 13:

It’s 13 inch screen size laptop. It is glossy screen as well as a good one.

The camera is located at the top of the screen. It used to be on the bottom in last year’s version. It also comes in white on white finish. On the surface, it is silvery-white instead of rose gold which they have last year model. The texture is also different.

BATTERY

Huawei MateBook 13:

When it comes to battery life, it is a 42 watt hour battery, and you get a nice compact type C charger.

Battery life is gonna be around 7 hours for the version with the MX150 in it. You’ll get a little bit more if you use the Core i5 version. I had no issues with the battery life. You can extend it if you do keep that screen brightness down a lot, but overall I’ve been very happy with the battery life of this device.

Dell XPS 13:

Battery life has always been at the selling point of these XPS laptops, but with this 4k model you’ll only just get a full workday out of it the high-resolution has a big impact on the battery life. It gives a maximum of eight and half nine-hour of battery life on XPS 13.

PERFORMANCE

Huawei MateBook 13:

The internal hardware, you get two specifications here, you get a Core i5-8265U, that is an 8th generation Whiskey Lake processor, or you can get a Core i7-8565U, which is what we have here, that’s also a very good performer, so this is a little bit faster than last year’s 8th generation Intel processor. It’s not a huge difference, but you do get that extra performance boost.

Now another big difference between that Core i5 and the i7 model, it’s gonna come down to a GPU.

The Core i7 has an MX150 GPU in it. It’s an Nvidia 1, it’s what most companies are using in place of Iris Plus or Iris Pro Graphics, which are not available for 8th generation processors. It’s a good GPU, it’s gonna give you a little boost, and for those of you paying attention, this is the 25-watt version of that GPU.

The Core i5 version sticks with Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics, so you’re gonna have that.

When it comes to storage, it’s 256GB or 512GB of SSD. They are using Western Digital SSDs in this.

And when it comes to RAM, well you get 8GB of DDR3. It’s all right, it’s nothing outstanding, but I think for this class it’s totally fine.

Dell XPS 13:

My XPS 13 is equipped with quad-core i7, 16 GB of RAM and fast NVME 512gb SSD, it feels nippy and responsive in general use.

Whiskey Lake processors aren’t a huge upgrade over last year’s model but with higher turbo boost clock speeds combined with improved cooling, so it performs well.

Overall we’re looking at about 10% boost in performance over last year’s XPS 13. If you’re thinking to buy this laptop for work or traveling then you should go for XPS 13.
