INTRODUCTION:

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

This is a premium mobile mouse in the Logitech MX line up and also in Logitech. This mouse is light and small which is great for travel use. The price is also a bit high but the features and all worth the price.

Logitech M720 Triathlon

We can say this M720 Triathlon Mouse is the successor of M705. This is a mobile mouse, you can easily carry it around anywhere you want, it is great in portability. The design and feel of the mouse are also great for this price.

DESIGN & COMFORT:

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

In the box, you get a short micro USB charging cable, your paperwork, the mouse, and a unifying receiver. The MX Anywhere 2S has a length of 3.95 inches a width of 2.43 inches and a height of 1.35 inches. Being a portable mouse, it weighs in at roughly 3.74 ounces. It’s very light so you can easily control and move it around. The USB to micro-USB cable that it comes with is about 2.3 feet, so it’s very short but you can use any micro USB cable. That tiny USB dongle comes in just a bit over half an inch in size but when inserted, it just about disappears.

The first thing that most people will notice about the MX Anywhere 2S is that it’s an attractive looking mouse. It’s available in three colors like grey, midnight teal, and graphite. The shape is very nice and organic with strong fluid lines throughout. On both sides, you’ll find this geometric design on what feels like a hard rubber material to help with your grip. It’s easy to hold and manipulate to use and move around.

Logitech states that its sculpted to fit your hand and there’s someone with big hands, I do think it’s a tad bit too small. The advantage of that size is that it makes it very portable and easy to with since it fits just about anywhere, hence the name. Now, this main piece with the left and right buttons is smooth matte plastic and towards the back it sort of melds into this other speckled plastic which decorates the edges throughout the mouse. Then, we have the mouse wheel with reflective sides and a very handy rubber track down the middle, which makes using it extremely simple.

One thing I don’t like too much is the micro-USB port on the front, it’s open and dead center which takes away from the overall great design of the mouse. Another thing unlike the first MX Anywhere Mouse, this one does not include a carrying case, being a well-designed portable mouse a case would have been a very nice addition to help protect it in your bag.

At the bottom of the mouse, we have four smooth rubber feet that allow the mouse to glide on multiple surfaces. They work really well but you have to make sure to keep them clean in order for them to glide properly. You’ll notice we don’t have a removable backplate because it’s a rechargeable battery, they don’t want us accessing that. Unfortunately, that also means we have nowhere to store the very tiny and easy to lose USB dongle.

Logitech M720 Triathlon

This is a pretty premium-feeling mouse. I think is a much better shape than the M705. The interesting thing about the M 720 is that although it is the successor to the M705, it tweaks the shape quite a bit. It kind of seems like it has a higher arch but more importantly that arch is further back on the mouse and so it fills out your palm a lot better. It’s great for palm grip users.

The shape kind of feels like they just took the shape of the MX Master and scaled it down to the size of the M705. It’s a great shape that makes very good use of its relatively small size.

FEATURES & PERFORMANCE:

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

We have seven buttons on the MX Anywhere 2S. First up the scroll wheel, overall it works well but it is a bit loose which causes the occasional extra click. One thing that helps avoid that is a nice rubber track down the middle of it which helps with precision. If you’ve ever heard someone say they love Logitech scroll wheels, it’s probably because of the hyper-fast scroll but now, it clicks as we spin it like a normal scroll wheel but if you press it down, it unlocks and then you can fling it to scroll incredibly fast. This makes it perfect for navigating long documents or webpages. Now on the side of the scroll wheel, we have two arrows and that’s because it’s also a tilt wheel that has horizontal scrolling left to right, very easy to use and we haven’t noticed any miss clicks due to it. Next below the scroll wheel, we have a tiny middle button. If you have the Logitech options software installed, it will also act as a gesture button.

Moving along to the side of the mouse, we have back and forward buttons not too big maybe a bit small but still easy to use and access. So then, we have the most-used left and right-click, personally, I prefer these as separate pieces instead of a single piece of plastic which extends to the back of a mouse. With individual buttons, you can click all throughout and it takes roughly the same amount of pressure to actuate the button. With a single piece, it’s most sensitive at the front and gets tougher as you go back. They work really well, they’re nice and bouncy, very responsive, and they have a nice audible click to them.

At the bottom of the mouse, we have the power switch and connect and switch button. The MX Anywhere 2S allows you to easily toggle between three different connections via Bluetooth or via USB dongle with that button right there. In use, it’s a bit awkward because you have to flip the mouse each time to press it.

It uses laser optics to capture specular reflections. This pretty much lights up surfaces and then shoots that contrast information back to the sensor, that’s why they went with a laser instead of optical because as the Logitech States typically laser sensors provide a stronger light source and better sensor. In my experience, I tend to side with optical sensors over lasers but this comes down to tracking on multiple surfaces, that’s the whole point of this mouse.

Logitech states that these tracks anywhere including glass. It actually does work as intended, it was tracking just fine on very grainy wood surfaces, glass, and even mirrors, this makes it an exceptional mouse to use wherever you are. The sensor has a DPI range of 200 up to 4000 lower than what you’d see on a gaming mouse but that should be more than enough for the average consumer. It seems the only option is the slider in the software with no indication of what your current setting is.

This may be a good gaming mouse for someone but if you’re looking to highly customize the settings you can tweak acceleration/deceleration, the polling rate, and the DPI is set via a simple slider.

In the last decade, wireless technology has gone a long way. The MX Anywhere 2S has a wireless operating distance of 32 feet which is pretty far. This makes it ideal to use with a media center while sitting on a couch or if you have a projector that you want to use from a distance and things like that. To connect, it uses advanced 2.4 gigahertz wireless and Bluetooth Low Energy Technology, both are very solid. Throughout our testing, we didn’t notice any disruption in connection from both Bluetooth and USB 2.0. They connected quickly and provided a strong signal, so feel free to use both without any concern.

Logitech Options software is nice, clean, and modern. On it, you can assign custom settings to specific applications. At the bottom, you have battery and connection status and you have various mouse settings. We can change the bindings on five buttons, those are back and forward, left and right scroll, and middle button. You can assign them to do a number of things from the very long list such as play, pause, task, view, or as a gesture button.

As soon as you set it, the side panel opens up and you can choose four actions for each side. The way gestures work here is that you hold down the assigned gesture button and then drag in the direction to activate the assigned action. You’ll know you’re doing it right because the mouse won’t move until you release that middle button. One negative is that there’s no memory on this mouse, so these settings only function on computers that have the Logitech options software installed, without that you only have generic functionality.

Also, we have ‘Logitech Flow’. This allows for multi-computer control, so you can go from one computer to the next as if they were one. It connects via your wired or wireless network and you have a few settings you can tweak. The best part is that you can also copy and paste text, images, and files of any size from one computer to the other. It can transfer any size but the transfer speed is only limited by your network. Overall, it works really well and it honestly has changed our workflow.

The pros are- this is an attractive-looking mouse but most importantly, it’s well-designed in both form and function. Logitech Options is clean, it’s simple, it’s easy to use. On top of that, Logitech flow allows this mouse to move among two or three additional computers and also copy-paste files from one to another at any size. Although it is small for massive hands, that size along with its lightweight makes it very portable and travel friendly. 70 hours on a full charge is pretty crazy but if that’s not enough, you can charge it for only 3 minutes and get an additional 8 hours of battery life out of it. You can this on all types of surfaces including glass without an issue. The darkfield sensor truly tracks anywhere.

The cons are starting with the scroll wheel. When you click and scroll that wheel is a bit loose which can lead to additional accidental clicks, this is most likely due to that hyper-fast scrolling feature. I did find that charging port slightly difficult to use but at least we can use it while charging. We do wish it was a bit bigger maybe a half-inch because some people will find it a bit too small for prolonged usage. Although it can remember three computers via the switch in the bottom, it cannot save your other settings such as bindings or dpi without the software installed.

Logitech M720 Triathlon

Aside from the multi-device connection button, the primary buttons are fine. I don’t have any problems with the left, right, or middle-click, the scroll wheel is also pretty nice. It’s still a basic mechanical hyper-fast scrolling wheel, they didn’t bring over the digital adaptive scroll wheel where you just flick it, and then it goes into free spin mode and then you stop it and it locks back up. This is just a mechanical free-spinning wheel which is fine. Even the mechanical version is still really convenient to just free spin, scroll right to the top.

They did also make a bit of an improvement to this area. On the M705, the mode switch button is right in the middle of the left and right-click buttons which makes it possible though not particularly problematic that you might accidentally bump the left or right or both click buttons as you’re switching modes. They’ve adjusted the shape of the buttons so that they’re not buttons at that point it’s just the body of the mouse which was kind of cool. Aside from the mode switch button, you’ve got some other buttons on the side, you’ve got back forward and bottom gesture button. You can customize these all buttons.

It has three memory levels and each one compared to a unifying receiver or Bluetooth which is really convenient. This has multi-device connectivity means that not only can I pair it with Bluetooth and I can also have the unifying receiver on any other device of yours. They did make some tweaks to it.

One thing, you’ll notice is that on the MX Master the button and indicator LEDs for switching are on the bottom of the mouse but on the M720, they’ve moved it up to the top of that mouse or rather the side. I actually found it really convenient to not have to flip over the mouse whenever I needed to change input. I do wish there was more contrast between the unlit and the lit numbers. It’s sometimes kind of hard to tell which one is lit up in a brightly lit room and it would just look slicker if the unlit numbers were darker. It doesn’t mention Linux support for Bluetooth but I had no problems pairing it with Bluetooth on a laptop.

I haven’t had any problems with the tracking. It claims to use some advanced optical sensors. The M705 used laser tracking, I think the M720 seems to do a bit better on more challenging surfaces than the M705. Of course, it doesn’t use any fancy dark field sensor, so it’s not going to work on a fully transparent glass or mirrors but all of the somewhat challenging surfaces that I’ve tried, it seems to track just fine. I haven’t noticed any tracking issues.

BATTERY:

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

Unlike the first MX Anywhere Mouse that uses two AA batteries, the MX Anywhere 2S has a very long-lasting rechargeable Li-Po 500 milliamp battery. By long-lasting, they mean up to 70 days on a single charge. Personally, the battery life could have been a week or two and you can simply attach the charging cable and continue using it while it’s charging. It also seems to have a quick charge feature that in just three minutes gives you enough battery to last the day, that’s pretty amazing.

Now, the way you charge it is by using the included USB to micro USB cable which you insert into the front of the mouse. This sounds simple enough but it’s actually a bit tough to insert. To cap it off, below the middle click button we have a battery status LED that notifies us of it’s charging state as well as when it’s low on battery.

Logitech M720 Triathlon

The battery life is something that at first glance you might think is a step back. The M705 quotes 3 years of battery life and then M720 quotes 2 years but it is important to keep in mind that the M705 has two batteries slots in the three-year figure is for both battery slots being populated where the M720 only has a single battery slot. The two years is for one battery, so on the whole that’s a pretty modest improvement to battery life.

WHICH TO BUY?

The price gap between these two mice is just $20. Even though the MX Anywhere 2S mouse is $20 more than the M720, it’s worth the price. The features and the portability is quite good in the Anywhere 2S than the M720. If you want a bit larger mouse than Anywhere 2S then the M720 will be good for you.

M720 is a great mobile mouse. It’s really nice to have it work. It’s just nice to have a relatively compact mouse that’s still really comfortable.

A bit on the pricier side, but a solid mouse that handles your day to day work excellently. The additional features improves productivity greatly, a good mouse to bring for working in any situations.

The MX Anywhere 2S is not a revolution in portable work mouse design: it is more of a thoughtful and planned evolution. The Flow feature is a highlight that will be useful for workaholics juggling multiple systems on the go. The fundamentals were already solid on the earlier iteration, and Logitech has managed to improve on those with the Anywhere 2S. If you want an efficient and feature packed portable mouse for work, this is one of the best your money can buy.

The Logitech MX Anywhere 2 is a well-built, versatile mouse that lives up to its name with a travel-friendly design and a sensor that works on nearly every surface.

By Nasilemaktech
To be honest, unless you’re going to take advantage of the Logitech FLOW technology, then it’s not worth the upgrade from its predecessor. However, for someone who uses a MacBook Air and a Windows desktop and don’t have enough screen real estate to work with, the Logitech FLOW does indeed work. Functionality, pretty much similar to Symless’s Synergy, but more elegant.
