If you’re confused to choose the best camera between the Nikon D3400 and Canon D700. Both are the much decent and good company with some nice features and some pros & cons. This will give you the correct answer which will be better for you.
Introduction
Nikon D3400
This camera is Nikon’s latest entry level DSLR camera. It’s aimed primarily at people who want to learn about photography and are perhaps moving up from bridge cameras or compact cameras or coming straight in from having done photography with their mobile phones. As a result, it is designed to help people to move along from the automatic settings, which will probably be used initially, onto the semi automatic and manual settings and help them become more creative with their photography.
Canon D700
The canon 700d comes with the CMOS sensor and 18 megapixel just like the little brother canon 100 d, that means the crop sensor off with the ratio for 1.6. It can shoot 5 frames per second and improved from 4 frames per second. It comes with the built-in flash shutter speed between 30 seconds and 4000 of a second, I saw between one hundred and twelve thousand eight hundred.
In addition, with the automatic time priority mode, aperture priority manual in the bulb, it offers the beginners the sports mode, macro landscape, portrait and creative mode, useless for people who are a bit advanced and a little bit helpful for the beginners.
Design & Handling
Nikon D3400
The camera itself is made of very tough plastic. It feels quite robust and sturdy in your hand. It has a very deep grip here which means that you can hold it quite easily with one hand – of course you shouldn’t take pictures like that – and in general it feels like you’ve got a proper camera in your hand.
Canon D700
This is a step-up in size and weight from the 100 d and 1200 d but much lighter than the 70d. It weighs half a kilo with no lens, it’s about 525 grams. The top dial to select the shooting mode is on the right hand side just like the 100d.
On and off button on top typical Canon main dial to go through the settings, shutter button in the same position like all the Canon cameras above the grip on the right hand side. We have a back button slightly different the AV button combined with the exposure compensation and multiple functions. Quick select button, directional menus with white balance, auto-focus shooting mode, and picture style, also menu button and info on top.
The good news which made me excited is that this comes with a flip-out screen which is extremely useful in my opinion for shooting photos and videos in difficult positions. Also, this is a touchscreen which is a very nice feature it can come with very handy features including the touch screen, shot a trigger for situation where you don’t want to press the button because the camera will shake. The lens release and pop-up flash are the same with the other cameras and just to note the mini microphone and the speaker on top of the pop-up flash. There is no battery display and for me it’s very annoying because I always like to know how much power I still have in my battery and how the battery performs.
Image & Video Quality
Nikon D3400
The file size of the NIKON D3400 goes up to 24 megapixels which is a really big size. You are not going to need anything larger than that unless you’re going to be shooting billboards. The processor, which is the EXPEED4 is a very competent processor. It gives you very clear bright images and it’s quite quick too.
One of the selling points for this camera which you’ll see on the side of the box and a lot of advertising it will go up to an ISO of 25,600. Now that basically means that it will take pictures in the dark. This sounds great but actually I’m not convinced that most photographers, particularly at this level, would want to go beyond an ISO of perhaps 3200. The noise ratio on 3200 in fact very good and that’s no small part down to the processor but really, 25,600? Unless you actually want to shoot pictures in the dark I would say that that’s a bit of a red herring.
Another thing I really like about this camera is that it’s got a very good, high resolution back screen. Now the back screen isn’t articulated so it doesn’t move but nevertheless it is high resolution and clear which is very useful. Why you might use the back screen is that if you’re used to compact photography then, of course, you will be used to taking pictures through the back screen and you can do so here. You can also shoot video through the back screen and compose your videos, and the reproduction on the back screen from shooting stuff through the lens is actually, as I say, very clear and actually very accurate in terms of what you see.
One of the things I really do like about this camera which I think would appeal to people who are moving up from bridge cameras or compact cameras is that it has some very decent effects on it and these can be used either before you take the picture or can be applied afterwards in certain cases, but the effects that you have here are really really useful.
For eg., you can have Night Vision which is a sort of grainy black-and-white shot, and Super Vivid which really punches the colors up. You can have Pop which likewise punches the colors up but tends to work more on pastel colors, and Photo Illustration, you can have Toy Camera which gives the effect of the picture having been taken with a cheap plastic lens camera. Also, You can have Miniature Effect, Selected Color which makes the photograph black and white except for the thing that you’ve chosen to be color, which looks really effective. These effects can really help your picture standout and a great fun to use.
The lens brings us some very neatly to using this camera for video. It is actually a very good video camera, it will shoot HD which is 1080 also shoot 720 and it will shoot 1080p at 60p which means that it will shoot at 60 frames per second which is about twice the required speed that you would need to shoot video. So, in other words, it allows you then to shoot that twice the speed so you can slow it down for slow motion action at 1080 which is at the highest real level until we get to 4K, so it’s actually very very good.
In terms of manual and auto exposure, the video it has both and they both respond pretty well the auto exposure works very well and gives you very good & clear exposure for video and the manual setting is also very good. The one downside is that this camera like all other cameras in fact in its category does not have an external microphone socket so you can’t fit an external microphone to this camera it does have an internal microphone which is okay but if you’re going to trying shoot anything like a professional level in terms of video, you will need either to get a different field recorder or even record on your mobile phone, there are apps for that these days, or consider getting another camera.
Canon D700
In image quality, beep function for the menu release shutter button image review. lens aberration correction that should be on all the time, redeye reduction again to be on at all times. In flash control which will control all settings of the built in flash or external flash and if you have a compatible external flash you can control that wirelessly, that’s a very nice feature if you ask me. The image quality differences are minimal comparing to other canon cameras in colour tones and sharpness is the same in my opinion.
In regards to video settings we have few good options 1920 by 1080 at 25 frames per second or 24 frames per second 1280 by 720 at 50 frames per second, a downside also the last option is 640 by 480 at 24 frames per second. It very disappointing from someone coming from the 70d video shooting with with a lot of features, I see a lot of limitations with the 700d but I guess you can’t have all of them but if you’re not very fast about it, this should be more than enough in a normal condition for someone who is not a professional and takes the occasional footage still the quality I’m pretty sure will be the same.
Image and video quality are outstanding and you can probably expect from all canon products. It does have a low price for people who can afford few hundred dollars.
Auto-Focus & performance
Nikon D3400
The Nikon D3400 has 11 auto-focus points in a diamond shape which pretty much go across that the screen as you would look at it either from the back screen or through the viewfinder. I would say they’re pretty competent because of the processor. The auto-focus is pretty quick.
If you buy the kit lens then you get the Nikon AF-P 18 to 55 MM lens. Now AF-P is a new type of lens and the P stands for pulse motor. It is primarily on this camera in order to make it more attractive for use with video and the pulse motor is very quick to auto-focus and also very quiet. But the speed of this auto focus on the lens is actually very very good and it would combine very neatly with the 11-point auto-focus system.
Now, why would you want more than eleven point in that diamond shape? Well if you are photographing something very quick and very small then the chances are it might possibly fall between the focus points as you’re looking at it through the screen in which case the camera will lose track of it and will have to refocus when it moves back into an auto-focus point, so obviously the more points you have the more chance the camera has of maintaining it in focus as it crosses the screen. But 11 focus points, I think is pretty good for a camera of this category and I don’t think you need to worry about needing more unless you want to do something very specific perhaps action photography for things like tennis where the ball is very small moves very quickly.
One thing I really do like about this camera it will give you five frames per second continuous, which takes you almost into the realm of professional action photography. This will do very good action sports shots as a result of that and that’s a real bonus for a camera at this level.
Canon D700
There is 9 auto-focus points which is exactly like the Canon 1200 and 100 D but not as good as in the impressive focusing system of the Canon 70d. In auto focus method, there continuous auto focus settings, touch shutter which can be very useful.
It does have the auto tracking focus in video mode exactly like the 70d not fast as the other one but still a very good feature to have, this is in fact a big reason for me to love this camera because you can shoot video and the camera will follow the subject.
The focus and the tracking of the focus in video mode they are quite slow, they are slower than the 70d but this is not a deal-breaker because this is not necessarily for the professional video makers.
WiFi or bluetooth
Nikon D3400
One of the things that people who are moving up from bridge cameras or compact cameras or even mobile phone photography will be keen to know is whether this camera has any WiFi or wireless connectivity. Well, it does have NFC connectivity in other words, bluetooth and that will enable you to transfer pictures of a certain size and resolution to a mobile device like a mobile phone or tablet. What it doesn’t have is WiFi and there are cameras out there like the Canon 1300 D that do have WiFi and WiFi would enable you to operate the camera remotely and be a bit more flexible in how you transfer your images. But the NIKON D 3400 does have NFC or bluetooth and it’s actually pretty reasonable to use.
Canon D700
Canon D700 camera doesn’t have bluetooth or WiFi feature in built, but you can use WiFi Adapter, W-E1 or third party Wireless Tethering systems. Also, you can use wireless SD card and transfer photos using WiFi with your smartphone.
Conclusion
Nikon D3400
The Nikon D3400 is an excellent camera for entry-level DSLR photographers. It is very well made, very sturdy and the sensor and processor combination are very good. 24 megapixels is a huge size of picture – you’re not going to want more than that and it produces very clear and very realistic in terms of its color saturation pictures and very detailed too. In terms of auto-focus which is partly the processors responsibility. The auto-focus is very quick and the 11-point diamonds are very useful and very appropriate for this sort of level of camera. The 5 frames per second continuous is really very good and will give you an opportunity to shoot action or sports photography with this camera so that’s a good thing too.
Things that I don’t like about it, I think I’ve mentioned before I think the menus are far too complicated. It is actually quite difficult to find what you’re looking for within them because there are too few menus with too many options inside and finally although it has some great effect inside this camera and I really do enjoy using them, but I think it’s a shame that it doesn’t have an HDR option because HDR photography is a great way of introducing yourself to the way of being creative with pictures and it’s just a shame that that wasn’t an option on this camera.
Canon D700
This is a great camera to have not only for beginners but for people who are a little bit more than a beginner. It comes with features that rival the big boys still a bit sloppy but nevertheless a serious competitor with more serious out there. This is the first step towards high enthusiasts photographers and remember the results will be the same if you know how to use it properly.
