Samsung Galaxy Buds

The Samsung Galaxy Buds have been pretty popular with the release of Samsung S10 lineup of phones and it’s because these actually work very well with those phones. These are retailing for a hundred and thirty dollars.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

The Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus is the updated version of the Samsung Galaxy Buds. With the Buds Plus, the battery life is updated to a good level. These do have a pretty good comfort level. These earbuds are retailing for around a hundred and fifty dollars.

DESIGN:

Samsung Galaxy Buds

When you open the box the first thing you see in the case of the earbuds is very tiny. If you compare it to Sennheiser’s truly wireless earbuds, the case is slightly more massive. The case itself has a USB-C input on the back and it has a tiny little notification light on the front to let you know where your battery levels at. On the top, it says sound by AKG. AKG is a Harman company that Samsung owns. They’re the ones that would be tuning the sound in these.

When you open the case, you can see that the earbuds sit in there pretty cleanly. The earbuds are pretty tiny and its advantages to a lot of people don’t want big obnoxious earbuds sticking out of their ear. On the inside of the earbuds, you can see the left and right are marked, you see the two little pin connectors that’s what you have to match up inside the case for them to charge. Then there is a little sensor so that the earbuds know when you’re putting them in your ear and then when you’re taking them out.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

The Buds Plus are obviously the more traditional, in-ear design, with a rubber tip that sits deep inside your ear canal. They’re a lightweight plastic with that shiny polished finish that I think makes them appear a lot more high quality than they actually are. You can notice on the underside of the buds two little gold connector pins and these are the contact points for dropping them in the case and charging them up.

These earbuds have a sort of seamless magnetic connection which is handy. So, as you drop them into their respective spots, the buds would connect automatically and sit perfectly inside the case. The case is elongated but small and slim and the case fits comfortably in a pocket. They also charge via USB-C and they support wireless charging as well.

COMFORT:

Samsung Galaxy Buds

The earbud itself has a very tiny silicon ear tip and then it has the little wingtip. In the box as well you get extra wingtips and extra ear tips so that you can find the one that’s going to fit you best. The earbuds itself is really small so that it would not stick out from your ears. These earbuds stayed fit in the ears perfectly during my headshake test also. As these earbuds are small in size there is no issue with comfort. These earbuds are comfortable enough and stay fit in the ears.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

The Buds Plus are absolutely more in-ear earbuds. The rubber tip goes fairly deep inside your ear canal, it fills it all the way up, and it seals the outside noise. You have a little bit more of the bud sticking out but these give nice tight with the rubber tip inside your ear and these aren’t going anywhere either. I would say to a greater extent for me because these sit so deep inside my ear and they’re supposed to fill up my whole ear canal and the tight fit makes them even more secure. If you have small ears or big ears or whatever the case may be, you can at least try to find an ear tip or rubber ring combination that works for you. Actually, they are comfortable too than the Galaxy Buds.

FEATURES:

Samsung Galaxy Buds

They come in black, white, and yellow. I do think with the white model, when you have these in it kind of looks like you have little cotton ball stuck in your ears. On the outside of the earbuds, you have your touch controls. I really do like the sensors in these earbuds because it’s not a physical button that you’re having to like push and jam in your ear to get it to do things. You are getting water-resistant wit these earbuds, so if you’re out running and it’s raining or you’re sweating it’s okay.

You need to download Samsung’s Galaxy wearable app so that you can have the controls and change what the touch functions do. You do have volume control and skipping the tracks, you can also summons your smart assistant and then do use the ambient mode. The other thing with Samsung’s app that leads you to download with these is it also gives you some EQ controls. It’s basically some preset settings that they already have in there but the dynamic one I found to be the best. I don’t think that the bass boost or the treble boost or any of the other settings really did anything as good as the dynamic one did.

I can say that based on the sound, I think they did a really good job especially, for people who like to watch media because these also have no lag with watching YouTube and watching Netflix and stuff like that. That’s where a lot of people are suffering from the truly wireless earbuds from time to time. They didn’t experience any lag issues with these at all. Overall, I think Samsung did a great job with these.

The thing that Samsung pulled back on is these do not have onboard storage like their other models. The other ones had four gigs which were just enough to put enough music on that. If you were gonna go for a run or go to the gym that you didn’t actually have to keep up with your phone and you can just use your earbuds and you can do already use the storage that the earbuds had themselves. But you cannot do that with these.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

These earbuds come in different colors, you’ve got black and white but Samsung also offers light blue, red, and silver. So, if colors are your thing you have a lot more options going with the Buds Plus. These earbuds do have those touch and tap controls. A single tap will play and pause music, a double-tap skips a track and there are some other customization options you can adjust to have them do different things in general. I’d say the more flatter design of the Buds Plus makes tapping just a little bit easier.

You obviously have much more freedom in regards to getting the right fit with both replacement ear tips and little rubber ear hooks or rings and if you want you can likely even find third party foam tips as well. The thing I want to stress though is that fit with Buds Plus is far more important because Buds Plus has a couple of extra features that solely depend on the tight seal in your ear.

The Buds Plus offer true active noise cancellation and a pass-through option in the app. So, not only does the outside world get totally sealed out, but if you need to hear what’s going on, you can do the opposite and amplify the world around you. The design of the Buds Plus allows for the more accurate iteration of active noise cancellation. The Buds Plus offer a true sealed off sound and more obvious and extreme active noise cancellation and pass-through also. Also, with the app, you have different presets and equalizer, so that you can play with them and get them sound as you want.

BATTERY AND ITS LIFE:

What you’re getting is really nice portability but what you’re not getting is great battery life because the battery life on the earbuds themselves says six hours. I was getting more at about five and a half which is pretty close but the case will only give you an additional seven hours. So, you’re only getting one extra charge. If you own the S10 lineup of phones then you can use the wireless charging on the phone to charge these up.

If you don’t have the Samsung phone, you do have to know that every time you charge your earbuds, you need to go ahead and charge the case because you’re not going to be able to charge them the next time without it. But these do have a quick charge feature that will give you almost a hundred minutes of listening time just by charging them for fifteen minutes.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

As far as charging and battery life, just three minutes in the case with the Buds Plus gives you about one hour of use. It’s actually up to 11 hours of battery life with just the buds and up to 22 hours paired with the case, if you’re not using any of the extra noise cancellation features. If you are using these earbuds with noise cancellation enabled the battery life will drop by an hour or two.

SOUND:

Samsung Galaxy Buds

These have more of a higher treble, clear crisp sound. I felt like the bass was the one thing that was kind of lacking and it’s not mean these don’t have bass, it is a tighter punchier bass. It’s just not very impactful. So, on songs like hip hop and metal, where you’re used to kind of feeling drums and feeling the base hit, these always felt like they were just slightly pulled back. It might not matter to most but for my sound preference especially, considering I like to feel bass and I always just wanted a little more out of these. I also felt like I wanted just a little more volume as well and it’s not mean that these things don’t get loud, they do but even when you just want to turn the music up as loud as you possibly can and it just felt like again you were limited with these.

What Samsung did do right in these is the soundstage was good. You could really tell where instruments were coming from and it’s not mean these sound like open-back headphones at all. It’s definitely nothing like that but it does a good job of not feeling like your music is into a tighter space. You can feel some awareness, you can pick apart different sounds and for that, I feel like Samsung did an incredible job and that might lean more towards the fact that they’re going towards a brighter crisper sound. If you put a lot of bass into your buds sometimes it starts to get muddy, it starts to feel like everything’s crammed together and these never had that.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus

The Buds Plus sound pretty good certainly a top tier pair of truly wireless earbuds. I think with the Buds Plus blasting them with the volume cranked all the way up is a little more extreme but to be totally honest, I never found Samsung Galaxy Buds to get that loud. But it’s louder than the Samsung Galaxy Buds. Other than the volume level, the sound quality of the Galaxy Buds Plus is the same as the Galaxy Buds. You can make some adjustments by using the app to find the profile that works for you. 

WHICH TO BUY?

The active noise cancellation with the Galaxy Buds Plus is super. The audio and mic quality is also better than the Galaxy Buds. Also, you do get better battery life with the Galaxy Buds Plus than the Galaxy Buds. So, in my opinion, you should buy the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus.
