INTRODUCTION:

Tribit StormBox

The Tribit StormBox is the speaker of the new brand Tribit and people are definitely liking it. About the price, the Tribit StormBox has a good head start on the other competing speakers. The power output of the StormBox is 24 watts. Tribit StormBox uses Bluetooth version 4.2. Range wise, the claimed range on this speaker, the storm box has a claimed range of 20 meters or 66 feet. The StormBox has a 7.4V, 2600 milliamp-hour battery. When it comes to battery life, the battery life is claimed in the StormBox at 20 hours. This speaker is waterproof, it is IPX7, which means it can be submerged to 1-meter depth for 30 minutes.

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom

Ultimate Ears finally has a new small speaker to compete i.e Ultimate Ears Wonderboom which is a small Bluetooth speaker. It is IPX7, which means it’s a waterproof speaker and the speaker can be submerged up to a meter in water for 30 minutes. It gives 360-degree sound and has great bass. The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom is available in many varieties of colour. It is great for pools, beaches, rainy days, and, muddy fields. The Wonderboom gives you up to 10 hours of battery life. Wonderboom can be paired with a couple of Wonderboom together and double up on the sound.

UE Wonderboom

DESIGN:

Tribit StormBox

Dimensionally the Tribit StormBox is in cylindrical shape it is about 68 millimetres in diameter and around about 180 millimetres long and weight wise StormBox is 544 grams or about 1.1 pounds. On the speaker, there are volume and power buttons that are big and clearly visible. The shape of the speaker is a somewhat rounded rectangle. The speaker has 4 LED light dots battery indicator.

Colour-wise it comes in 3 colours, it comes in either the really bright blue, your standard black, and, camo. It doesn’t come in different colour options nut the blue is something a little bit different to the boring old black that you normally see. Charging time ranges 4 hours, it is a little bit on the long side at 4 hours but not a major issue. What got me interested in the StormBox is the amazon ratings for the storm box which were 4.6 out of five with over three and almost three and a half thousand reviews, so that’s quite a good rating.

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom

The build quality is amazing. The Wonderboom looks like a small pebble-shaped speaker with the two large clicky volume buttons in the front face and the rubber surface in the top and the bottom with three buttons lying on top. Wonderboom has a great design, it has that all the fabric around it which we have seen the UE roll too and the colour scheme is amazing. It’s a rugged speaker made for outdoors and another factor of its design is that fabric hook on its top which makes it pretty easy to carry it around and it can be hooked to a backpack or somewhere which makes it pretty easy to carry it around.

The Wonderboom is quite compact. The design gives it a nice soft look but how it’s made as identical to the other UE products, these things are built like tanks, it’s dust, mud, and, stain-resistant. When you will take a closer look at the speaker, you have power and pairing up top, the UE logo also works as a way to control your music with one tap to pause and play, a double tap will skip your song forward but no controls to go back, unfortunately, a triple tap would have worked perfectly there. With the same UE logo, you can double up with another UE Wonderboom and have two speakers play at the same time.

FEATURES:

Tribit StormBox

The features of the StormBox are really good. On the box, there are given some basic information about the speaker. When you will open the box with the speaker, it comes with a micro USB cable for charging and a lanyard so that you can clip it onto or attach it to items and also has a user manual that comes with it that explains all the different functions about the speaker and how to operate it. It has a 3.5-millimetre audio input socket plug, which will allow you to plug in other devices.

The next main feature in this speaker is, that it’s IPX7 waterproof and that means that it can be submerged to 1-meter depth for 30 minutes and no issues and I personally dropped mine out in a bucket of water while it was playing music and it continues to play and it actually floats which is good, so if you happen to be out if you’re boating and kayaking or whatever and you drop it in the water it’s not going to sink to the bottom, like some of the other speakers do this one will float on top. So, nice little handy feature it is, I did find that the Bluetooth does get cut off by the water, so your range is not very good in the water, but this is not really a speaker that you want to be playing in the water, it’s just one of those things those features that if you happen to drop it in the water it can float if you are out in the rain you don’t have to be worried about this getting wet.

There are a few things with this device that is disappointing, apparently, I’ve heard that the battery like all lithium batteries over time, they do degrade as they get older, some people have reported that after a couple of years that the battery life is maybe down to six to eight hours, but yes that’s typical of most electronic devices these days. Also, there is no app with this device it’s just simple, pair it with your mobile phone and it will just play the sound. So, if you’re looking for an app with maybe an equalizer well then the StormBox doesn’t have that.

There is some distortion at max volume but again that’s something that you might see with most Bluetooth speakers, it’s not something you really want to drop this speaker at max volume, but that max volume is quite loud. Apparently, this one does take a little bit longer to charge than the other competitors it is reported at four hours and I think when I charge mine up from empty it did take probably closer to five hours. So, if you want it to charge quickly maybe a bit of a con but again it’s something that I would just plug in leave overnight. The last con is that it uses Bluetooth 4.2 which has less range but really that makes it more compatible with the older devices and range-wise I didn’t really have any issues, I thought 40 meters is actually quite good.

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom

The first thing which got in my eyes about the speaker was its big sound and huge base despite the small size. The box of the speaker is pretty small and at the back, there are a given number of features. For opening the box there’s the cardboard around which you need to pull over, and then there’s the black box and we need to flip that over there will be the Wonderboom itself and underneath the Wonderboom, there’s the bright yellow wire the micro-USB cable to charge the speaker up and it’s pretty long and it’s flat and is extremely portable, you can carry it around with you easily and that’s the special thing about Ultimate Ears products and accessories which comes with them.  Also, there is the manual and the guide.

The speaker is drops resistance from up to 5 feet, which I’ve tested. It’s also IPX7 certified, meaning this can go underwater for up to 1 meter and up to 30 minutes at a time. One of the biggest benefits compared to the UE roll 2 or JBL flip four, this speaker can’t float on its own there’s peace of mind while you’re at the lake and it’s also perfect by the pool and if you do have kids you may tend to throw the speaker in the water.

The volume up and down buttons are located on the front, pressing both at the same time gives you somewhat of a battery indicator, it plays a certain tone to indicate either full, medium, or, low battery left. This is one of my biggest gripes though simply having a speaker speak the percentage would have been great, even 5 white LEDs would have been more intuitive it’s not a deal-breaker but something simpler or more precise I think any consumer would appreciate. All the buttons are very responsive and clicky. When you rotate to the rear there is a port for the micro USB cable to charge the speaker there. No, exhilarate is offered for physical connections so just the heads up on that.

UE is claiming battery life to be up to 10 hours of use and with my testing at 50% volume, I was able to get 10 hours in 20 minutes and when I tested with a full blast at full volume, I was able to achieve 2 hours and 50 minutes to be exact almost 3 hours. Regarding Bluetooth signal strength, UE pulls through climbing up to 100 feet of signal performance, I personally tested it and it gives the full range wherever I go only with the speaker, at my house.

UE Wonderboom

SOUND QUALITY:

Tribit StormBox

The good thing about the StormBox is, it’s got a very good sound quality and this gets rated well by a lot of the audiophile sites like hi-fi etc. They’ve given it good ratings and I agree I’m a bit of a music snob myself and I think that the sound that comes out of this is very good quality. Volume is more than adequate and I love the bass sound, the smart assistant link is a great feature not that I’ll be using it much but it’s there and you will also love that it’s got the 3.5-millimetre jack that you can plug into older devices too. The range is more than adequate 40 meters is huge, so no issues with range and also another bonus is that it floats in water, so that’s always good too.

The storm box is a 360-degree speaker. It has two active speakers, so they are located on opposite sides of the device. So the two active ones throw out either side and there are also two passive speakers at either end as well. So they pump out a bit more bass sounds. This is a mono speaker on its own but if you want to get the stereo sound you can get two of them and pair them up together and they will give you stereo sound.

There’s also a bass function on this speaker which is called X-bass. So, there’s an x-bass button there that you can turn on and that boosts the bass a bit more it’s not hugely noticeable, you can notice that the bass does go up but really doesn’t make a massive difference but the bass on its own is quite adequate. There are no issues with that it’s got a nice deep bass sound so no complaints there. Volume-wise, there are no issues with volume with this speaker you can turn it up to max and it’s quite loud. It does get a little bit of distortion at max volume but no complaints with the volume on this speaker.

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom

The biggest selling features though on the boom products, they do provide 360 audio outputs with no matter which side of the speaker is standing on you’re going to experience direct audio. The speaker sounds amazing and it’s a very loud speaker for such a small and compact size. It’s perfect for small rooms and for sure loud enough for medium rooms as well. According to the UE they did disclose they went with a more balanced sound signature, it’s not a bassy Bluetooth speaker, it doesn’t sound bass boosted either and that’s fine for those who do prefer that type of listening.

There is no option to allow for audio separation, simply left and right audio channels, but the two speakers playing at the same time does fill a room much more than obviously just one. Also, this double up method only works with another Wonderboom speaker you can’t mix and match with the boom 2 or the mega boom at this time. Apparently, two speakers together are very easy and unlike the previous UE products no app is needed to hold the logo down at the same time and they pair instantly with each other.

Those who are familiar with the boom 2 and mega boom they’ll find the audio characteristics similar through the Wonderboom. You will enjoy the speaker as a casual speaker as most genres perform well. There are a few select songs once in a while where there is slight rasp Enos or distortion between the upper bass frequencies and lower end of the mid-range, more noticeable at higher Volumes. Same with the mid-range it’s somewhat Ford, which I do personally like but at times the high frequencies do get sharp intakes away from the experience and as with most Bluetooth speakers, there’s no audio separation or an open soundstage.

Tribit-StormBox

WHICH ONE IS WORTH BUYING?

Well if you’re looking for a nice good quality Bluetooth speaker that you can take with you out anywhere, the Tribit StormBox is definitely worth having a look at. And at the price at $60, it’s just way better than the competitors you know you’re spending double that for. Wonderboom is worth $60 and depends on the colour you buy as the price increases with colour. The speaker is loud, where it provides a more neutral bass sound signature. But the 3.5mm auxiliary connector for wired sources is lacking. Overall, it is compact, it floats in water and the biggest reason I think is it’s built rugged as hell, complete peace of mind basically. The battery life of StormBox is up to 20 hours, while Wonderboom gives 10 hours. If you want colour options Wonderboom offers many, while StormBox only comes in 3 colours.

So, there is not much price gap between both speakers, both are good but it totally depends on your choice that what are you looking for, in a speaker. So, buy the one which is best and suitable for you.
