In interior design, spiral staircases are one of the most beautiful elements and parts of houses or rooms. We can do this type of construction ourselves or we can also contact professionals and specialists to build them. Regardless of the way in which they are going to do it, there are a series of constructive principles when talking about stairs and it is important that these principles are not violated in the name of aesthetics and modern design and below you will understand why.
Spiral stairs for interiors and their principles
The most important reason why it is not advisable to break the construction rules is that the stairs can become quite a dangerous place, especially when they are spiral. In the interiors, comfort and safety when leaving and descending become one of the most important characteristics that do not have to go against decorative and aesthetic principles.
Unlike the straight stairs that follow an ascending line without curves, the principles of the spiral staircase are much more complicated because there are more elements that we have to take into account, such as the height of the staircase that includes the space between the area they begin the steps and the area in which they end, there is an external diameter that covers the distance between the two furthest points of the steps and an internal diameter that is the center area.
On the other hand, we also have to take into account the number of steps the ladder is going to have, the thickness of each of them and the angle of rotation of the ladder. From there, we can create our design and our spiral staircase model.
The most appropriate measures for spiral staircases in interiors
They have to take into account that in these types of stairs the steps are the most dangerous part, with which the safety measures and the constructive measures are mainly oriented towards them. You all know that on these stairs, the steps have a triangular shape, which, due to many security measures that we take, will always open up a zone of greater danger.
Each step of these modern stairs is made up of the length, the width of the step, the width in the middle, angle of rotation, the tread and the riser. The length of the rung is the measurement between the two outer, parallel edges, which is where the widest area of the rung is. Its measurement does not have to be less than 80 centimeters because otherwise the step will be too small to support our feet.
At the same time, the width in the central part does not have to be less than 20 or 25 centimeters and it does not have to exceed 40 centimeters. The last element that must be taken into account to create the perfect triangles for the use of the ladder is the angle of the triangle that is attached to the axis of rotation of the ladder. This angle has to oscillate around 40º.
More construction principles for interior spiral staircases
There are two more measures that must be taken into account to finish the design of stairs, which are the tread and the riser. The tread is the part of the step on which we rest our feet to go up and down and, as we have already said, its measurement does not have to exceed 40 centimeters and it does not have to be less than 20 cm.
On the other hand, the riser is the vertical part of each step and in these stair models it has its oscillation between 25 and 30 centimeters. However, today there are some modern interior stair designs in which this constructive element is missing. It is about the floating stairs. For its elaboration, the measurement of the riser must be lower than that mentioned above. The most appropriate in these cases would be a riser of about 18 cm.
The reason for this last principle is that when one of the constructive elements is missing because the design follows modern principles of aesthetics, the person going up or down the stairs may feel insecure and may lose their balance. In this way, when the height between the steps is smaller, the feeling of insecurity disappears.

After the principles, the next thing that we must take into account for the design of our staircase are the materials that we are going to use for its elaboration. Aluminum stairs look great in elegant interiors with a lot of style and decorative elements can also be added to the railings and steps.
On the other hand, if you want, you can turn the staircase into a decorative detail or a decorative accent if you paint it in a more prominent color. Instead, if you prefer, you can let it blend in with the rest of the interior, letting other interior details play the role of accents.
