The Astro A10 offers best-in-class build quality and cushy earcups, but it might be too heavy for some. It offers big, dynamic sound, but I give a slight edge to the HyperX Cloud Stinger, which delivers cleaner highs and mids by dialing back the bass a bit.

The Astro A10 won’t win any beauty contests, but compromising looks to focus on audio seems to have paid off here—it sounds way better than its $60 price tag implies.

Detail Review:

INTRODUCTION:

Astro A10

This headset is a steal for those people who want low budget headset or who are beginners or want an entry-level headset. The design, comfort level, and importantly the sound quality is great in this headset.

Astro A40

This headset is really expensive but it is worth for that price. The design and comfort are just perfect, it really looks like a gaming headset. The sound quality is amazing and it worth every penny.

DESIGN:

Astro A10

The design of the headset is nice and simple. It’s a little bit bulky but I do like it because it doesn’t feel in terms of weight as it looks.

It’s a really flexible headset. It’s designed to be durable, which means you can toss it around and you still get a solid feel on this headset. It won’t be damaged because it’s got a nice new metal band that is flexible and bendable which means I can bend it all around either way and still wear the headset and it fits on my head comfortably.

Astro A40

The headset itself is a very sturdy build. They have an adjustable slider that definitely doesn’t just loosey-goosey slide around and it has little notches. So, once you find what you like, it stays right there and I like that it’s very solid and it doesn’t just slide around, it’s definitely well built. It’s well crafted and the customization of the headset is really key.

COMFORT:

Astro A10

The headset may look bulky but it’s well balanced. It actually feels light wearing them. The ear cups have some soft cushion around them, they’re loose wavy. So, if it’s really hot, you might sweat on them.

Astro A40

The headsets look bulky but it’s really not that much-weighted headset, it’s quite lightweight. The design of the headset gives perfect comfort, it will fit comfortably and it will be the biggest advantage.

FEATURES:

Astro A10

The most interesting thing about this headset is that the Astro A10 is under $100, actually, this headset is $60 and it packs a lot in here to give you satisfying gaming experience. Astro is brought in their sensibilities in audio into a headset that is sub $70 to give you a great experience.

It’s got one port and that’s basically an aligning port that allows you to connect your headset to different consoles. This will work with your Nintendo Switch, you can also connect it to your PC, and you can connect it directly to your Xbox one controller. Now, If you want more functionality, you can also get the MixAmp M60 which gives you more functionality in terms of being an increasing volume game chat from the Xbox One.

Now, there are also basically two accessories that come to the headset if you’re getting the Mix Amp version, the MixAmp M60 and you’ve got an inline remote which basically has volume controls in there but that’s pretty too much it.

Astro A40

The only difference between the Astro A40 and the A50 is the wireless option. The reason I like the wired version over the wireless is because of lag. There is a less amount of lag that you get when you have a wireless connection. I wanted to get the sound as quickly as possible and you get that with a wired connection, so that’s why I like wired over wireless.

The way that this headset receives power is via micro USB to USB. Now that USB port is actually plugged into your PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC. The cool thing about powering this MixAmp is you do not have to plug it into your console or PC to use it, you can actually plug in this MixAmp to a standard everyday phone charger that is really cool. So, if you’re running out of USB ports or anything like that use a phone charger.

When it comes to your system set up with this MixAmp, the first thing you’re gonna want to set up is your fiber optic cable which is Digital optical cable. This has to plug into your console, TV, sound system, PC if it has it.

The thing about these cables is they’re very fragile because it’s a fiber optic cable. If you crimp or pinch this cable, it will damage, it’s not gonna work the same and you have to get a new digital optical cable. I like that Astro actually sends out this cable and it’s very long plenty of room and it’s thicker. They’ve gone ahead and made sure it’s sturdier for the everyday gamer, so this is a sturdier thicker version and it’s definitely a quality cable.

Make sure that you switch over to Dolby Digital surround sound that way you’re definitely getting the best quality audio that you can get with this headset. Some of the features on the MixAmp itself are your adjustable gain which is a big dial and there is your game and voice audio. So, you can adjust and tinker with, you can do it on most consoles and you can even do it on most PCs when your PC gaming but I like that they have it right here that you can go ahead and adjust your game volume to voice volume. So, you can get the mixture that you want.

If you would like to customize your MixAmp more, you can go online and change all the EQ settings under the Astro website and you can customize and create presets and save them onto your MixAmp that is definitely a big feature that other companies are not offering in their headsets. It’s just depending on what type of game you’re playing or just what game you’re playing period, you can adjust your EQ. So, this comes with some natural presets already built into your MixAmp and you change that by pressing your EQ button.

Now, the top left is Astro mode and the bottom left is tournament mode and the other modes are mostly for natural bass and just watching movies and listening to music and that’s all good and well but for gaming itself, you want to be an Astro mode or tournament mode and that is the most sound whoring mode. In that mode, you can listen to footsteps and you can hear people reloading and everything. in my personal opinion, Astro mode is also pretty good for having that equalization, for gaming in first-person shooters or fighting games. You have a button here to turn off and turn on your Dolby Digital surround in your headset.

MICROPHONE:

Astro A10

You’ve also got a drop-down boom mic which has good capabilities where you pull it up or drop it down to actually speak. This mic gives you some really good audio.

The mic quality is really good. It sounds absolutely amazing. This is the best microphone Astro has ever made. I love the audio from the A40 and A50 headsets but the microphone has been lackluster. I’m happy to clearly state that this is one of the best microphones on a gaming headset and they’ve done a really good job. When I started using it while gaming, I realized I could actually use this for voiceover It’s really crisp and clear. They’ve done a fabulous job here, they put a lot of work in actually improving something that. It’s better than even they’re more expensive gaming headsets.

Astro A40

The Astro A40 comes with a removable mic. Now, if you are rough with this removable mic and you put it in a rush or in a hurry, you can damage that port but if you just do it the way you’re supposed to, it’s never gonna mess up on you.

The cool customization of this headset is that I can take the mic off and remove this cup, you can buy the cups customized with different types of designs which really totally awesome. You can put the mic even after cups removed if you prefer it there that’s really awesome, I think that that was a great design that they put in there. I think it’s very viable because some people maybe don’t like the mic on the left-hand side of your face and want to switch to the other side. The big pro thing on this headset is you can set the mic both the sides of the headset.

The mic quality out of this mic is great. I tested this mic with my team, this mic definitely sounds very good and it’s clearer and better than the previous mic that I was using. It’s a better quality mic I can’t say how it compares to the other headsets in its price range as far as the price range of this headset but it’s definitely a good mic in my personal opinion.

SOUND:

Astro A10

Now, when it comes to audio in terms of listening, you are getting almost the same fidelity. You’ve got very similar drivers to your A40. You’re going to get a very rich sounding experience. For $60 though, I am quite impressed with what Astro has to offer here, this is a solid offering. I think any gamer would like this headset because they are basically for $60, you get it and a perfectly normal mic.

In this, you have a great audio experience. You’ve got something here that any gamer would like and they could definitely pick up. This is a solid buy for me. I really like this headset and I think, a lot of gamers will love this and definitely want to pick it up.

Astro A40

The reason these headsets dominate the market is that they are so well built, comfortable, and they have that surround sound. Other headsets try and simulate that surround sound and they do very good at doing it and when you start to use this type of headset then it’s hard to get to the normal headset. It was not the same and then you never want to have to use that headset again because it does make that much of a difference.

It is for the serious gamer if you enjoy gaming and having an edge on your opponent or just being immersed in the game like really feeling the game and hearing the game, you don’t hear anything else. This headset is so comfortable and it fits so well that you don’t hear anything else.

This has a kit where you can actually create a noise-canceling, I don’t find that necessary because of the volume capabilities of this headset, I mean, I feel like I could blow my eardrums out with this headset if I really turned it up. It is so clear, loud and so precise with what it does put out. It’s amazing, it sounds like you’re really in the game, it’s very immersive.

WHICH TO BUY?

I would say if you have a budget of around $250, you should definitely buy an Astro A40 because everything in it is just amazing and perfect. If you don’t budget that much, the Astro A10 is also a good headset but of course, for this range of price difference, there are also many differences in features and sound quality. If you’re looking to pick up a gaming headset from Astro or even a gaming headset that’s under $70, Astro A10 will be great.
