Expert Review of Canon EOS Rebel T5i:
By Digital Trends
Recommending the T5i for still photography is a no-brainer. It’s easy to use, takes quality images and has enough technical headroom so you can spread your creative wings if you care to. Movie quality is just OK, however; perhaps we’ve been spoiled by…

The Canon EOS Rebel T5i is a decent camera. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s a good value, but it’s a known quantity: It’s a T4i with a new mode dial. The Rebel line of DSLRs has offered a consistent level of quality that—while uninspiring—is good for…

The Canon EOS 700D doesn’t break new ground for this class of camera, nor is it a huge change from the 650D before it. If you own the previous camera, there’s little reason to upgrade: it should be the excellent 70D that you set your sights…

The Canon EOS 700D with the brilliant new 18-135 mm lens is a delight to handle, save for the processing issues. Thanks to the built-in mic, auto-tracking features, stereo speakers, tiltable screen, and Full HD video support you can make short feature…

Within a year after the Canon 650Dwas introduced, Canon hadalready brought its successor, the Canon 700D, to market. In many ways, the Canon 700D is equal to its predecessor. And that’s not even that bad, because the Canon 650D was/is an attractive…
Detail Review:
INTRODUCTION:
Canon EOS Rebel T5i
This is DSLR camera of Canon and the next continuous model of Canon T4i. This camera has Articulated touch screen, live view shooting, and many other features also with the kit lens.
Canon EOS Rebel T6i
This camera has pretty good grip and button layout. This is the newer version of the Canon T5i and It has some positive and negative features.
DESIGN & HANDLING:
Canon EOS Rebel T5i
One of my favorite things about this camera is the touch screen access to all kinds of settings and also touch screen image review. I really loved using the touch screen access to review my images among other things. The only thing is to make sure that you have a microfiber cloth with you all the time, so that you can keep those smudges off the screen.
Another nice thing about the LCD is how its articulated. It’s twist, flip LCDs that let you hold the camera low or high or even stand in front of it and still see the LCD clearly is the kind of thing that’s ideal for videographers and self-portraits.
Canon EOS Rebel T6i
The T6i remains small and compact with its durable polycarbonate plastics. Subtle grips are provided throughout the camera but one area that I wish the head texture was on the card door itself where your palm plants against the camera. It’s not too bad since Canon does provide a decent deep grip for holding alleviating any slippage. The overall quality feels great though the camera itself weighs just a little over a pound at 18 ounces. Now with the battery and kit lens attached, this camera at 1 pound in about 10 ounces.
FEATURES:
Canon EOS Rebel T5i
It’s an 18 megapixel aps-c CMOS sensor equipped camera that shoots impressive images and captures great 1080p video at 30 frames a second. There are some differences as compared to their previous model. The mode dial on the T4i has a stopping point and the T5i rotates all the way around. There’s real-time preview of creative filters in live view on the T5i. The finish is a little bit different and the T5i can zoom digitally during movie recording. One final difference is that the T5i is available in a kit with an 18 to 55 millimeter STM lens and the T4i is available in a kit with an 18 to 55 millimeter lens that’s not an STM lens other than that the T4i and the T5i are identical.
The T5i has a cool feature in Live View shooting that takes advantage of the touch screen itself, it’s called touch shutter. When it’s enabled, you just touch on the live view screen and the camera focuses where you touched and it snaps a shot. It can be a bit slow to respond but you can speed it up if you’re in bright light and you already have the image pretty much pre focused.
Canon EOS Rebel T6i
Now, the tap buttons and dials provide very much good feedback with a nice firm press but the rear is a bit softer and more flush against the body when compared to the aforementioned buttons but the actions are still executed perfectly fine. Now, a hot shoe makes a return for connecting accessories like a speedlight or an external microphone.
On the left side of the camera are ports for that microphone and a remote control, a mini HDMI is also provided for connecting this to a monitor or TV and a port labeled AV out which I use to connect my camera directly to my computer for file transfers. Now, it’s unfortunately not a microUSB port but it’s a mini USB port. So, the more common cables you use to charge your phones, tablets, and other devices won’t work the cables are indeed affordable now but keep in mind it uses a different USB connection.
Like most consumer grade DSLRs, there’s a swivel touchscreen which is perfect for those who intend on blogging yet perfect for those timed grouped photos to ensure everyone’s in the picture. The screen itself is a 3 inch TFT LCD screen that’s not plastic feeling but a smooth and solid piece of glass. Some consumer grade cameras does feel more plastic and it just feels cheap but the LCD here is simply amazing. It’s not an OLED screen but the colors still pop and the richness and contrast looks very accurate.
The last set features are now more common on consumer grade cameras, NFC abbreviated for near-field communication and Wifi are now available. Now you can just tap your phone on the bottom of the camera and your T6i will automatically connect to it with the Canon Connect app. You can use your phone as a remote monitor and then tap your phone to take a photo, it’s highly convenient.
Now, it unfortunately doesn’t work in video mode though and when testing other cameras here the T6i performs very similar. It’s not 100% smooth flowing but if you are taking still photos, it’s still very useful. Now in the app, you can change settings and possibly the best feature for me. You can wirelessly download photos from the camera to your smartphone for posting onto social media. Now, the professional level Canons and Nikons don’t even offer that feature built-in but overall when using the camera it’s easy to learn where all the settings are and the layout is pretty simple.
Turning on the camera, all of your settings are displayed and if you don’t like using the buttons, press the Q button and your LCD becomes your interactive menu for adjusting your settings, white balance, ISO levels, exposure, photo profiles.
IMAGE QUALITY:
Canon EOS Rebel T5i
The 18 megapixel sensor has a native ISO range of 100 to 12800 and it’s expandable up to 25600. So, you should expect good low-light performance.
The T5i runs on canons digic 5 processor and the cameras burst rate is five frames a second and I was able to shoot around 22 full-sized images to my class 10 SD card before the shooting rate slowed down a little bit. The specs claim that as many as 30 JPEG images can be shot in that burst group but the fastest card that I had was rated at 400 X, so you may get better results than I was able to because this camera is intended for novices and enthusiasts.
You’ll find all the pro shooting modes like program mode, shutter priority, aperture priority, and full manual but you’ll also find several great automatic modes for beginners and intermediate users. Canons answered a full auto mode is called scene intelligent mode, there’s also a special scene mode that has three options: night portrait, handheld night, and HDR backlit.
The scene mode, Canon has on several of their cameras which I really like for those who are not white novice shooters is called creative auto mode. Rather than just full auto mode for a complete novice who doesn’t want to set anything many new shooters out there know that they want a particular look but they aren’t really sure how to get it. For instance, they may want a blurred background and if they don’t yet understand shutter speed aperture and ISO settings necessary to get the look they want, they can just use the simplified settings in creative auto mode to get the look they’re going for.
Canon EOS Rebel T6i
This is such a fantastic camera for those who are not tech or camera savvy. This camera provides just colorful and sharp photos without any adjustments. Regarding colors, the Canon does very well with making colors pop yet still keeping all the colors still balanced and not oversaturated and not overdone.
You can use the burst shot mode which is perfect for catching those very fast-moving moments. One image style that cameras usually have a hard time with our bright backgrounds and your subject is in the foreground, usually it creates a black silhouette and with T6i in just auto mode in no manual settings, it will give you a great image. On macro shots or very zoomed in close-up shots did very well. I believe details and clarity are there with the camera but as important the color reproduction is still vibrant, no need to edit.
Now, using this in auto mode, the low-light performance still does well. There are some spots where there is light the objects there are blown up a bit but you can be the judge for yourself if this looks acceptable to you or not. Now regardless, I’m still impressed though that there’s not much more noise from high ISO levels in the dark areas of the photo though but eventually I did switch over to manual mode for the nighttime shots just to achieve the best photos that I can get. The ISO levels up to maximum of 12,800 does introduce some noise here but for a camera under $1,000 and for a camera considered as a consumer camera and not semi-professional, I am very impressed.
VIDEO QUALITY:
Canon EOS Rebel T5i
The T5i video performance is darn good too. It can capture full 1080p HD at 30 frames a second and besides the onboard stereo microphones, you can plug in an external mic. You can also adjust sound levels in camera and there’s a movie servo mode for auto focusing. I like how quickly accessible video shooting is from any mode dial position because you just flipped the on/off toggle switch pass the on position and you’re in video mode. You can snap images while you’re filming but I wouldn’t recommend it because there were a few dropped frames in the video and you will hear the hard shutter sound especially if you’re using the on board microphones.
Canon EOS Rebel T6i
Those who are playing and doing videography or blogging in general, this can’t record up to 1080p and Canon does advertised up to 60 frames per second. However, the smooth 60 frames per second is only reserved for the 720p resolution. The competition the Nikon D5500 does offer full 1080 with 60fps there but I like the auto focus very much on the T6i. It’s smooth and it’s virtually silent when compared to Nikon that I’ve been using. The only thing that I see missing though really for videographers is audio monitoring. You can’t tell if this microphone is either too loud or too low, there’s really no headphone port but other than that I highly recommend this camera for the average consumer or those really who wants a darn good at DSLR for $1,000 or less.
AUTO FOCUS:
Canon EOS Rebel T5i
The autofocus system uses nine cross-type sensors for fast response and the center focus point is a dual cross type sensor rated for use at F 2.8, just one more feature that will help your low-light shooting.
Canon EOS Rebel T6i
You can tap anywhere and your screen where you want the camera to focus on. Basically, it’s alleviating going through the viewfinder and pressing the directional buttons on the back of the camera. Overall, it’s been zippy and fast as well since Canon has upgraded to the digic 6 processor which helps with the cameras speed and also helping with the the new sensor that’s on-board.
There’s an increase in auto-focus performance as well. The T5i came with 9 auto-focus points versus the T6i now coming in with 19 and all 19 are cross focusing type. The more area of crossing points you have, the faster you’ll be for focusing images and with more precision as well especially for those again moving objects and people.
For example, the Nikon D5500 a direct competitor that is to the t6i has an impressive 39 focus points but all those 39 only 11 or actual cross-type. The more cross-type, the more effective your auto-focus system is.There’s an increase in auto-focus performance as well. LENS:
Canon EOS Rebel T5i
There are a bunch of reasons, this is a great camera. The T5i is available as a kit with this 18 to 135 millimeter F 3.5 to 5.6 STM lens. If you plan to shoot any video that’s a big deal because STM lenses are new Canon technology that allows for practically silent focusing during filming.
Canon EOS Rebel T6i
The Canon made the big upgrade for the kit lens in this camera compared to the previous model of this camera. You can but this camera is available body-only kit with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens or Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens. This both lenses are good quality and better choice but I prefer 18-135 lens.
WHICH TO BUY:
It’s going to come down to how good is the brand new T6i processor and how good is the brand new 24 megapixel sensor that is in the Canon Rebel T6i. It was not much better than the Canon Rebel T5i then get the camera of T5i and save your $150 and invest that in better glass.
