Detail Review:

INTRODUCTION:

Turtle Beach Recon 50X

This headset is really cheap. This will be good for those who have a very tight budget and who are beginners in this gaming field. The comfort level and sound quality are also decent for this price range.

Turtle Beach Stealth 600

This is somewhere very similar to the Stealth 600. The wireless connectivity is decent. For this price range, the comfort, sound quality, and other features are good enough.

DESIGN:

Turtle Beach Recon 50X

Each piece of the Recon 50X is solidly put together. Though it is made of plastic, it never feels cheap in your hands or while it’s on your head. Although it may not be made of premium materials, the build quality of the Recon 50x remains quite good.

Turtle Beach Stealth 600

The look and feel is basically what we’ve come to expect from Turtle Beach. It’s made up of glossy and black plastics with green accents on the Xbox version and blue accents on the PlayStation version. It most certainly has the gamer aesthetic going on, however, it’s definitely less obnoxious than a lot of other gaming headsets out there. You can definitely sit around listening to music without looking ridiculous which can’t be said for most gaming headsets out there.

COMFORT:

Turtle Beach Recon 50X

Each ear cup can be swiveled 90 degrees back or 10 degrees forward and the adjustable head bound allows the Recon 50X to be resized for different sized heads. Comfort-wise, the Recon 50x is simply excellent. As I was mentioned before, the adjustable headband allows it to fit comfortably on any user’s head. This comfort is aided by a small faux leather pad on the top of the band where it rests on the head. Each ear cup is made of fake leather as well which feels very nice over the ears.

I never felt as though the headset was squeezing my head uncomfortably or with excessive force and I’ve never experienced headaches after prolonged use. The only discernible knock on comfort is that occasionally your ears will get hot but that isn’t so much the headset’s fault as it is just a fact of life.

Turtle Beach Stealth 600

There are also lots of cushions all over the headset. Any part of the headset that touches your head has basically an inch or more of a really plush cushion. This is the mesh version, I imagine the leather version is equally comfortable but I have no problem wearing this for two-three hours at a time with no pain around my ears. It’s completely over the ear design.

You can adjust the overall size of the headset for those with smaller heads and those with very large heads and also the ear cups tilt in and out to better augment the side of the wearer’s head. Another thing that I really like is the completely fold-flat design for easy storage or transportation.

For those of you who often wear glasses, you’ll definitely appreciate this feature. It has a glasses friendly design in that the cushion on the lower and upper part of this pad. It has harder material, more dense but this space in between is very soft and is not going to press your the arm of your glasses up against your head.

FEATURES:

Turtle Beach Recon 50X

The cable feels solid and shows no sign of breaking as does the inline volume and mic control. The volume wheel is slightly depressed but it’s still usable well the mic and on and off switch provides a satisfying click and tactile feedback when used. The detachable microphone connects via a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary connection and it can be adjusted to whichever form the user desires. I have yet to have any issues with it bending out of place.

Not much setup is required for the Recon 50x, just plug into either the headset adapter or the 3.5-millimeter headset jack on the new controller and get started. If you have any issues with this I would recommend ensuring that your controller is on the latest software update and trying again.

For those using the adapter, the volume can be adjusted using it. Users with the newer controller with the 3.5-millimeter jack built-in will have to use a software control panel on their Xbox to the lack of independent chat and game volume wheels on the headset. I can see this becoming somewhat tedious for on-the-fly adjustments and it’s quite unfortunate that such controls aren’t built-in, still, the setup and use remain relatively painless.

Turtle Beach Stealth 600

Physically, the headsets are very similar to the Stealth 700. They have the same body, the same Wireless integration, and the same 50-millimeter drivers. However, the 700 has a few extra features such as Bluetooth connectivity, so you can take phone calls or listen to music, a mobile app to change headset settings, dynamic chat boost, active noise cancellation, leather accents instead of this mesh fabric, and the 700 is a little bit more expensive than the Stealth 600.

There are versions for this headset, Xbox and PlayStation version which works with PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, and PC right out of the box, it has a little dongle that comes with it. The Xbox version is a little bit different, it only works with Xbox, it can work with PC but you have to buy a separate dongle for that to work.

There are no dongles, no wires, no USB receivers, this is the simplest connection process I’ve ever encountered with a headset. It connects to your console much the same way a new controller would, you simply turn it on and press a little button on the side to begin to search for a console and then you likewise press the search button on the side of the Xbox, they find each other and that’s it. It really does function just like a controller, you can sync it to an Xbox and you don’t need to bring any dongles or receivers with you. It can even be used to turn on the console again just like a controller would you simply turn on the headset then it’s gonna turn it on.

It also comes with four pre-loaded audio presets which are signature sound which is the intended sound that the engineers behind the headset intended for, the type of sound signature they were going for. Then, there’s a bass boost if you want to listen to music or you want a more boomy cinematic experience then there’s a bass and treble boost which is just much punchy. However, I notice that high volumes if you have the bass and treble boost on, you definitely get a crackling sound if you have the volume maxed out. Finally, the fourth one is a voice boost which if anything just pushes down the bass and treble.

15-hour battery life is what Turtle Beach says you can expect from this headset and from my testing, I didn’t quite get it to last that long but it did last well over 10 hours without needing a recharge. Unfortunately, you cannot listen to it and charge it at the same time, this is one way that it departs a little bit from a controller. Of course, if you have a rechargeable controller, you can simply plug in the controller into your Xbox and continue using it as a wired controller while it charges that functionality is not present here.

The cord is way too short, it’s only about two and a half three feet long and I don’t think anyone says that close to their console. It has independent chat and game volume knobs which are definitely useful, you don’t need a little dongle sticking out at the bottom of your controller to control that or have to open the Xbox settings to mess with it.

The biggest thing in the wireless headsets is connectivity issues. Every minute or so the sound would cut out for two to three seconds which doesn’t sound like a big deal but when it happens so consistently and then so repeatedly, it definitely gets really annoying and sometimes, it would disconnect for so long that would actually completely disconnect from the console and I couldn’t just turn it back on I’d have to resync it. To solve this problem, you have to update your settings of the headset and also console. Then, make sure you have a full charge when you use it and at least don’t use the headset till the battery dies because at that time the distortions occur most.

MICROPHONE:

Turtle Beach Recon 50X

This is a boom-type mic, so you can adjust it wherever you want to and it can get to your mouth as possible close. This is not the best microphone I ever heard but this is good for this price. The huge problem in this mic is distortion. We can’t say every sound in this mic is clear and crisp.

Turtle Beach Stealth 600

Turtle Beach is known for putting pretty decent microphones on even their budget-friendly devices and this microphone is no exception. It doesn’t have the active noise canceling that stealth 700 does, it still does a pretty decent job of isolating my voice. If there’s plenty of noise and it does a pretty decent job of filtering that out. It implements this functionality that we’ve seen on other headsets where to mute the microphone, you simply tilt it and you bring it back down to unmute.

SOUND:

Turtle Beach Recon 50X

Although comfort and ease of use are important, there’s no point in buying a headset if it doesn’t sound good. Now, don’t let the Recon 50X’s low price or place in the segment fool you, they sound great for a gaming headset. High, medium and low frequencies are all delivered clearly and without distortion.

For game audio, this allows music effects and other such noises to be heard with a definition. The headset has aided me more than a few times regarding hearing enemy footsteps in Halo 5 Multiplayer or on Call Of Duty. Shot audio is clear and the mic input quality is good as well. Although I wouldn’t specifically recommend that you buy these headphones to listen to music with considering there are superior dedicated options out there, they still perform respectively when doing so. For example, the Halo 5 title screen music sounds quite good through the Recon 50X as do a number of other game soundtracks.

Overall, the audio quality on the 50X is great for the price point which performing on the same level as other more expensive options that I’ve tested previously.

Turtle Beach Stealth 600

It also features surround sound gaming which has become a staple in the headset marketplace. There are two options for virtual surround sound that the headset supports. The first one is already on your console, it’s called Windows Sonic surround sound. All you need to do to access that is go into your console settings and go down to the audio settings and under headset audio, you will find the ability to change it from stereo to Windows Sonic Surround but there you will also find an option for Dolby Atmos.

The Dolby version sounds much more immersive than the Windows version, however, it does cost money to access. In likewise, it carries over to your PC, so if you listen to audio through your PC on a virtual surround sound headset, you can likewise use Dolby Atmos on there as well.

In my experience, the stereo sound is playing through the headset right out of the box is pretty unimpressive. I would most definitely recommend that you turn on either the Windows sonic surround sound or splurge a little bit and get the Dolby at most version. It also doesn’t get super loud and again if you have it on that really Boomy setting and you have the volume back style that’s going to crackle at really loud areas. So, you don’t have to keep that in mind. I would have appreciated it being a little bit louder, I understand it’s wireless so they’re probably trying to conserve battery life by not letting it get too loud.

If you have a lot of exterior noises, you may want to spend a little bit of extra money on the stealth 700 as opposed to the 600 because the mesh and the overall design of the headset don’t do a really great job of canceling out background noise.

WHICH TO BUY?

The price difference between these headsets is about $70. I think For $100, the Stealth 600 is good enough in sound quality and also the features are nice and especially it’s wireless. But, people who have a tight budgets or who are beginner and want a wired headset with some basic features, the Recon 50X will be good for that.
