Detail Review

INTRODUCTION:

Apple iPhone 11

It’s no secret that Apple’s products sell at a premium and while the iPhone 11 is technically the cheapest new current iPhone you can buy. Apple still sells this phone for the launch price of 699 dollars for the 64-gigabyte model and it only goes up from there. There hasn’t been a price change from Apple and you shouldn’t expect one either until the next generation of iPhones comes out but from third-party sellers, you can get this little bit at discount.

Apple iPhone XR

Currently, the XR or 10R toughest competition is the iPhone 11 and with that, you get a slightly faster chipset and significantly better camera system. The rear got an added ultra-wide lens and the selfie camera got boosted to 12 megapixels from 7 and both of which are significant improvements but the XR can still take portrait photos and for a lot of people, the camera is more than enough. So, the iPhone XR still worth and if the iPhone 11’s cameras don’t pique your interest, you might as well save some money. Going below the iPhone XR is the $400 iPhone SE which for most probably isn’t going to be as interesting because of the older design.

DESIGN & DISPLAY:

Apple iPhone 11

Compared to literally any other smartphone from 2019 or 2020, this device looks dated but this is the same design and style Apple has utilized since the iPhone 10 in 2017. If you’re an iPhone user, this is just what we get. Realistically, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the whole thing. The top-notch isn’t great when we have nearly bezel-less phones now and the iPhone 11, in particular, has chunkier black borders all the way around the phone and stands out quite a lot. Even Apple’s least expensive iPhone doesn’t compromise on the materials and build quality. The all-glass and aluminum construction are comparable to the thousand-dollar-plus iPhone 11 Pro and that’s great, you’re still paying for an Apple product after all and that comes with a certain level of premium materials that you’d expect. Using this device without a case for a bit, there are some scratches that stand out which is a bummer but it happens. It doesn’t have so much to do with any sort of durability issue.

The single biggest thing that critics have against this phone is the less than stellar display. The iPhone 11 screen is an IPS LCD panel with a resolution of just 1792 by 828. Even Samsung’s budget A series of phones from last year that retailed for like 300 dollars had nicer screens, they had AMOLED panels and true 1080p resolution that just doesn’t bode well for the iPhone. It doesn’t look good when you compare the specs straight on but if you’re analyzing the iPhone 11 screen not making any comparisons and maybe you didn’t even know all the specs upfront, the Liquid Retina display here still looks good.

There’s nothing wrong with the viewing experience in general, you might be able to pick out the pixels but it’s still a bright and colorful display. For a vast majority of people, they probably won’t know any different, especially coming from an iPhone 7 or an iPhone 8 which I think most people interested in this phone would be. Size-wise, I think 6.1 inches is a perfect fit, it’s not too big or too small, you can still use the phone one-handed just fine but the screen is large enough to where I feel like I still have plenty to work with.

Apple iPhone XR

The iPhone XR is still a great phone and if you have it right now, you would know that it’s fast and has a good camera, a great battery life, and perhaps most importantly feels modern with the iPhone 10 light design. Going from an older iPhone to this feels like a real upgrade even if the next model is a bit better.

The iPhone XR was certainly a statement phone back in 2018 with one of the most unapple like Apple designs since the 2013 iPhone 5C. Apple isn’t known for giving you options for color but the iPhone XR flips that notion on its head with bright vibrant eye-catching colors in red, yellow, blue, and coral as well as white and black. I remember thinking with the 5C back in the day even with the white one because it was plastic and it just didn’t seem like a normal iPhone but the XR fixed this mistake by retaining the premium nature of the iPhone 10 by the glass front and back. We do have an aluminum franc which isn’t quite as fancy as stainless steel but is lighter and doesn’t scratch easily, so there are advantages. The XR kind of reintroduced into the lineup more uniqueness for the user. Buying a color other than white and black really helps you stand out from the crowd. I like these colors a lot better than the iPhone 11 colors and iPhone 11 goes for more of them almost like a muted color palette just not as bright.

The display is one of the most controversial topics when it comes to talking about the XR. Although most of that has died down since the launch because the screen is fine. At 6.1 inches with a resolution of 828 by 1792 and pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, this is admittedly the same pixel density as the 2010 iPhone 4. For the vast majority of people, the screen doesn’t look low-quality and when I go from the iPhone 11 Pro Max, it doesn’t feel unnatural and I can see the difference to be sure but considering the price difference that comes with it, the lower quality display is worth it for most out there. With those thinner bezels on the display though we do get a notch at the top which has also been somewhat controversial. You’ll get used to it very quickly as it kind of just disappears to your eyes as you use your phone.

FEATURES & PERFORMANCE:

Apple iPhone 11

Now with iPhones, Apple obviously has control over both the hardware and the software. They make the processors that utilize their own iOS and that means that it’s up to them to create the best possible user experience with their phones and this is something they do really well. The A13 Bionic chipset and Apple-designed GPU inside this phone are tough to analyze. You can’t exactly make a direct comparison to like the latest Snapdragon processor necessarily and the four GB of RAM this phone packs might even suggest the device is underpowered but you have to base your judgment on the overall experience of using the iPhone 11 each day.

Coupled with the latest version of iOS, Apple offers the kind of UI an ecosystem that people just can’t seem to give up. Apple did go through a rough patch of bug-filled iOS updates and pushed out new versions like every few days to try and play catch-up but since then, using the iPhone has been a nearly flawless experience because Apple has so much control over everything even the third-party apps from the App Store.

This is still a current iPhone after all and I don’t think it slowed down at all. Performance is great, the phone is fast and any game or app in the App Store is going to run well on this phone. I think Apple is also really committed to offering updates with its phones for years to come, you can literally get the latest version of iOS on the iPhone SE which came out in 2016. So likely the iPhone 11 will have a four or five-year lifespan at a minimum and that’s great because you are still paying a ton for this phone. So, having the latest software and support I think is a big plus.

The stereo speaker setup is great. I think Apple offers one of the best out loud listening experiences on any phone. you’ve got wireless charging which most of people never use but it’s there at least. The iPhone is IP68 water and dust resistant. One thing that still a little bit negative though about this phone and really any iPhone nowadays is face ID. It has improved and gotten faster over the years, it’s still frustratingly inconsistent. Having to adjust the angle of the phone or re-swipe up to try again or ultimately wait for it to completely fail and prompt the passcode, all happened multiple times per day. I know face ID is very secure which is why sometimes it’s a little touchy and that’s also why it allows for its use with Apple pay and other third-party apps but honestly, it’s just not something I’ve enjoyed on any iPhone. I wish we at least have been offered an additional option to unlock like a fingerprint sensor on the power button or under the screen.

Apple iPhone XR

We have Apple’s A12 chipset here and 3 gigabytes of RAM. The A12 is still a very fast processor, so there’s no concern here and for Android phone owners, three GB of RAM might not sound like a lot but for an iPhone it’s plenty. iOS is super well optimized and whether you’re running iOS thirteen or fourteen on here, they all run smoothly butter and that’s what’s important for these kinds of phones. The gesture system is based around fluidity, so you can count on Apple doing their best to keep it fast throughout the rest of its life.

It’s getting iOS 14 and if we go for the five-year timeline looking about 2023 being the earliest Apple might stop updating it. That said, the hardware is really good so it could potentially go further. This is the benefit of Apple giving the XR, the most current chipset for the time. The XR should last every bit as long as the iPhone XS. Practically, anything you want to do with your phone is going to be an enjoyable experience from games to social media to internet browsing, this is still a great phone in 2020.

We also get faced ID instead of Touch ID which lets you unlock by looking at it and works really well. If you’re a bit hesitant about-face ID, the iPhone SE is the only phone Apple is selling that has touch ID. The iPhone XR also has water resistance, so a drop in the sink should be fine. The iPhone XR design in my opinion is a really good compromise between the more premium iPhones and cheaper iPhones.

CAMERA:

Apple iPhone 11

In regards to the cameras, I’ve also compared it to a handful of other devices at all different price points too. I found that there are a couple of things the iPhone does really well and a couple that it doesn’t. I think the iPhone takes some of the best selfies of any smartphone whether you’re snapping a quick picture or utilizing portrait mode to its fullest effect. The iPhone’s front camera is the one I’d choose over probably any other device right now.

The dual rear cameras on the iPhone which include just a 12-megapixel standard lens and 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, they’re also enough to get the job done a majority of the time. In the right lighting conditions, I have no complaints. I think the phone takes a good-looking well-balanced shot. The area I think the iPhone most noticeably falters though is in less than ideal lighting conditions. I think the iPhones night mode is great, especially when you let it do its thing during a super long exposure shot but in like dim lighting outdoors or dim indoor shots, shadowy outdoor shots stuff like that, the iPhone struggles to balance the lighting and capture the detail.

For most people, the camera setup is going to be great, it’s way better than average and there’s a lot of potentials but as other smartphone manufacturers continue to focus on their camera tech specifically by adding more lenses and introducing more features and overall just making it the main selling point, I think the iPhone 11 this year is going to have a tougher time competing.

Apple iPhone XR

With the iPhone XR, we are getting a single 12-megapixel wide-angle lens on the back of the phone that has the ability to take portrait photos of people links to software but only people. Photos generally are good maybe great depending on how you see it. The iPhone 11 has a pretty massive upgrade to this department, so if the camera is important to you that’s the phone you should be looking at. The XR does the job and it does it quite well. Portrait photos are also usually pretty well done too although when you take the photos I’d recommend taking quite a few as there will often be little small mistakes on the edges or in the gaps of the subject.

Video can be filmed in up to 4K at 60fps and here on the screen is 30fps because that’s probably what you’ll be using most of the time. It takes an amazing video. This is better than most if not all flagship Androids on the market right now and Apple is just always been great with video. The selfie camera is 7 megapixels and it’s pretty good honestly, I don’t think most people require a spectacular selfie camera but if you do the iPhone 11 does bump things up to 12 megapixels. Overall, while the camera isn’t the phone’s strongest suit, it’s quite good still and for $600 I think it’s better than most would expect. It actually does have worse camera hardware but thanks to the better processor in it, the software compensates and actually produces sometimes a better-looking photo with HDR.

BATTERY:

Apple iPhone 11

When it comes to battery life, this is what I’ve gone back and forth with. After about six months, the battery health somehow is already down to 94 percent, so at least a percentage decrease per month so far. I suspect that’s partly due to the fact that if utilizing a USB-C fast charger every single day. That consistent fast charging is rumored to negatively affect the health of the battery but I also do use my iPhone a lot each day, so it’s not like it’s getting a break either. There have only been a few times thus far where I was surprised at how quickly the iPhone was drained but through casual day-to-day use, like Twitter scrolling, YouTube videos, texting, and a handful of games, I think the iPhone does do a nice job getting through.

Apple iPhone XR

We do get wireless charging as well as fast charging although a fast charger isn’t included in the box. The battery capacity of this phone is about 2,942 milliamp-hour which is 8 and 10 percent larger than iPhone X and XS respectively. In this price tag, it works well with this range of battery life capacity.

apple iphone- XR

WHICH TO BUY?

The iPhone 11 still not a cheap phone even taking up the Amazon renewed option. I still would go with this phone over the 11 Pro as a better overall value and looking ahead at the long term, this is absolutely a phone I could have for three or four years at least. It’s going to be supported and I know it’s going to hold up and realistically, it’s also going to retain a significant chunk of its value too.

On the other hand, the iPhone XR is also worth buying. You should but the iPhone XR or not? It depends on your personal situation and the best thing I can say is that at the moment I do believe this phone is worth the money it would cost you, then waiting until about November will either result in this phone being reduced in price or being discontinued altogether in which case the iPhone 11 will probably cost the same. I do recommend anyone who wants a good camera to go up to that iPhone 11 but otherwise, if you think the XR is for you, don’t be afraid to pick one up.

Expert Reviews of Apple iPhone 11:

By Dxomark
The high price tag of flagship iPhones means that people who are wedded to the Apple eco-system and looking for an upgrade might be attracted to the more pocket-friendly iPhone 11. If photography is an important factor in that choice, the good news is that by and large the less-expensive device lives up to the excellent all-round image quality of the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

By Camerajabber
If you are keen to get a brand new iPhone but don’t quite have the budget for the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone 11 makes a lot of sense. Two of the onboard cameras are the same, only sacrificing the telephoto lens here. There are other compromises to be made elsewhere, but otherwise it’s a great option for Apple fans on a budget.

By Firstpost
The iPhone 11 is easily the best choice for most people, but if you care about display or design, skip it.

By Indiatoday
For iPhone XR users, I wouldn’t recommend upgrading to the iPhone 11 just yet. You can wait for around 6 months and hope for the prices to drop in India, or wait for the iPhone 12 to come out, which should offer a more substantial upgrade in terms of hardware and display.

By What Hi-Fi?
The iPhone 11 is arguably the pick of Apple’s new brood and a brilliant all-rounder.

Expert Reviews of Apple iPhone XR:

BY Knowyourmobile
Despite cutting some corners to reach that price point, Apple has created a colourful and powerful handset which is arguably a better choice than the more expensive XS and XS Max.

By What hi-fi
Cheaper than Apple’s OLED iPhones, but the XR still delivers a picture and sound performance to be proud of.

By Cnet
The iPhone XR is the best iPhone for the price, delivering most of the advantages of the iPhone XS for hundreds less.

By Gottabemobile
The iPhone XR is the best iPhone for the money for most buyers. You get nearly identical performance, excellent software, most of the iPhone XS features, wireless charging, Face ID and a good camera for $250 less than the cheapest iPhone XS. You can score deals as low as $449 when you trade in an iPhone as part of your upgrade.

By Gadgets360
While we are not fans of its display, it does its job without being particularly great. In other areas such as performance and camera quality, the iPhone XR more than holds its own, and is a match for the more expensive iPhone models as well as other flagship phones.
