INTRODUCTION:

Logitech Z623

The Logitech Z623 is a speaker system with two satellite speakers and one subwoofer which is also known as a 2.1 speaker system. These are one of the speaker sets from Z series speakers. These model speaker sets are currently retailing for around a hundred and twenty dollars.

Bose Companion 2 Series III

These are desktop speakers so they are not wireless or Bluetooth, they plug directly into your computer. In Bose’s lineup, they have models that range from one hundred dollars to four hundred dollars. This one is the 100-dollar version and it’s the cheapest in their lineup.

DESIGN:

Logitech Z623

The Logitech Z623 speaker system has a main speaker which also includes your primary audio controls. You have got your power button on and off right there, and you got your main volume knob. I use to leave this about the middle there which is almost static-free. So it’s pretty quiet and noise-free at the distance and that’s with the volume turned up halfway already and the computer turned on and running. So fairly noise-free at that level which is really nice. It also comes with a subwoofer with a 2.1, so it’s got the main speaker and another speaker. This is just a nice simple powerful system if you want to have a decent bass response and a good stereo experience.

The left speaker is a little bit more simple in the front. It’s just a primary cone speaker, it doesn’t have any tweeters or anything. There is a THX logo up there which is not a tweeter. So it’s just a single cone speaker element and this just has a single cord out and that cord goes over to the other side and plugs into the subwoofer. So the subwoofer is actually the primary control module for the whole system. In the right speaker, we do also have a headphone output so you can go ahead and plug in your headphones if you have this on a computer desk and you just want to plug in some headphones and monitor. It also has spare audio in there via the audio port.

Bose Companion 2 Series III

The right speaker has all of the action, on the front you have a volume adjustment knob and a headphone input jack. On the back, there are four ports, the first one is to connect the left speaker, below that you plug in your power supply, the third port allows you to plug in an additional music device such as an iPhone or iPad, and the last port you plug in your computer.

The subwoofer is ported over the side and it’s 400 watts total power and 200 watts RMS system which means it has about 200 watts of power to give you at any given point in time. At a peak power output, it’ll do 400 but realistically if you were to average it out it’s going to give you about 200 watts at a time. Another nice thing about this system which is kind of a must for me is that it’s got a separate control for the subwoofer. So if you turn the bass all the way down, the subwoofer doesn’t function at all. But when you turn out that bass, it’s actually got pretty good response for the size of the unit. It’s not a very large system at all and it doesn’t take up much space.

If we see in the back of the right speaker, this right speaker has a little bit thicker cord coming out and that’s because this actually goes into like a VGA cable input. This cable has the controls for the volume, the bass, and the main unit power as well as the audio signal for that speaker that’s why it’s a little thicker. The cable down there to the right speaker cable is the output to the left speaker and also it’s got a regular just mini audio in as well as an RCA head.

One of the really interesting things about this stereo system that I haven’t seen a lot of them is it plays audio from all of the inputs simultaneously which is actually really interesting. For example, I have my PlayStation 4 plugged in through the audio speakers and I have my computer plugged in down there, it will play inputs or it’ll play sound from both of those inputs simultaneously. So if I have music playing on my computer and a game running on PS4, it will all come through these speakers seamlessly. It’s something to be aware of because if you don’t want that, there is no way to switch back and forth between the two.

Bose Companion 2 Series III

We get a package of papers that include instructions and warranty information, below that is an audio cable where you can plug in these speakers into your computer or your smartphone. I really appreciate how Bose packed these speakers, they are suspended in the plastic so when shippers throw around the box these speakers won’t get damaged or dented. The first thing we see is a little black box, and inside is the power supply. Behind that are your two speakers.

One great thing about the system is I can plug in two devices at one time and when I have both of them plugged in it doesn’t mute the other device. For example, I have my computer plugged into these speakers, I can also plug in my iPhone to these speakers and it won’t mute the sound from my computer so that’s an awesome feature.

SOUND QUALITY:

As far as the sound quality, this system is pretty powerful and I found is like a lot of modern stereo systems it’s very high on the treble and it’s very high on the bass response but the mid-range is lacking. That kind of makes sense when you consider there aren’t really any big woofer elements that aren’t the subwoofer which is going to have a low cut on it. This has got some good bass response and when the computer turned up to max the highs still remain pretty crisp and the lows are quite deep. It has a pretty broad range it doesn’t go into those deep lows which is probably pretty reasonable considering the size of the woofer element.

Bose Companion 2 Series III

I tested out the sound quality of these speakers at a 50-percent volume level. My impressions are the speakers can be really loud and can also fill a really large room but they’re also comfortable for a desktop environment. The sound is really crisp and there’s also good bass and listening to music and movies sounds great with these speakers.

WHICH ONE IS BETTER FOR THE PRICE?

In my opinion, the Logitech Z623 is better for the price even though it is currently retailing for a price more than the Bose Companion 2 Series III because it sounds better and loud and it has the subwoofer which sounds great which is not there with the Bose Companion 2 Series III.
