Detail Review

INTRODUCTION:

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus

The Galaxy Tab S7 plus is the best Android tablet which can also be used as a laptop. There are lots of pros and cons when you want to use this tablet as a laptop.

Apple iPad Pro

This new Apple iPad Pro is made with the intention of an alternative to Macbook Pro and also use it as a traditional tablet, which doesn’t succeed that much. It cannot be a full replacement for Macbook Pro if you edit a lot and use it as a laptop for pro things.

DESIGN & DISPLAY:

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus

The Tab S7 Plus is a pretty big tablet but it still somehow feels impossibly thin at just 5.7 millimeters. It’s also pretty lightweight for its size at just under 1.3 pounds which is a bit less than the comparably large 12.9-inch iPad pro.

The star of the show is the 12.4-inch display on the front. So, this is a super AMOLED panel as you would expect from any high-end Samsung device these days and it’s been updated with a 120-hertz refresh rate and a 240hz touch sampling rate which makes everything on the tablet feel incredibly smooth, especially the S Pen. Just like we saw on the Note 20 Ultra, the 120-hertz refresh rate really makes the S pen feel more responsive on the Tab S7 Plus, there’s almost no noticeable latency and it’s pretty much like putting pen to paper that feels really great to use. Of course, it’s mostly meant for things like drawing and note-taking but I really like it as just a general touch input device. It’s a bit more accurate than my finger and a little nicer to use than the trackpad.

Apple iPad Pro

When it comes to the design of the iPad, it’s very premium as you would expect from Apple. It is fairly thin considering this is the 12.9 inch iPad. The bezels are also a very solid size in terms of being able to hold on to it without accidentally touching on touching the display. Although the display does collect fingerprints fairly easy, so you may do find having to clean off the display fairly often.

When it comes to the display, you will be extremely happy. The colors look great, viewing angles are good. It isn’t an OLED display that would be the cherry on top with iPads but it does have a 120 Hertz refresh rate when you do a couple that with Apple’s animations, it makes the overall experience so smooth.

SPECIFICATIONS & PERFORMANCE:

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus

The tablet starts at 850 dollars, with that you get a snapdragon 865 plus processor, 128 gigabytes of expandable storage, and 6 gigabytes of RAM. For a bit of extra cash, you can upgrade that to 8 gigabytes of RAM and either 256 or 512 gigabytes of storage and you can even add 5G for the first time on a Samsung tablet which is great.

You get quad speakers tuned by AKG and 45W USB-C charging both of which are fantastic and there’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor just like on Samsung’s flagship phones which is pretty good, not great. It’s running Android 10 with Samsung’s One UI 2.5 software overlay, I’m assuming it’ll be updated to One UI 3.0 once the android 11 update drops.

In its default software settings, the Tab S7 Plus basically runs like a giant phone with giant phone apps, it’s not great but Samsung did its best to work around some of Android’s inherent tablet app problems with its DeX interface. So, you can launch DeX through a number of shortcuts in either the keyboard or the software and once you do, it really puts you into a desktop-like experience. You get a taskbar at the bottom of the screen, you have windowed apps that you can resize and drag around, it feels a lot like using a Chromebook. Those windowed apps are really the key here because they let you run the phone versions of apps like Instagram that don’t have tablet-optimized views in much smaller more practical ways.

It goes a long way to making the Android tablet experience feel a lot more cohesive but DeX has some of its own problems that I’ve found a little hard to get around. The trackpad is one example, it’s pretty small which is understandable given space constraints but I found it super annoying that I can’t just leave my thumb on the bottom of the trackpad while I scroll with another finger, instead, you have to keep your thumb completely off of the trackpad or else the tablet starts to think you’re trying to do a multi-touch gesture. I also found window management to be pretty clumsy in DeX mode, while I appreciate the snapping tools in theory it’s a little finicky in practice, especially when you’re using your finger or the S Pen instead of the trackpad. I’ve got some other small gripes with DeX like how the otherwise keyboard is constantly interrupting my typing to try and change the input language but the point is DeX isn’t perfect and despite a great effort from Samsung, it still doesn’t completely mitigate the issues with Android tablet apps overall.

The Tab S7 Plus is an incredibly powerful tablet with one of the best screens but once you add the keyboard into the mix, this starts to become an $1100 tablet and there really aren’t that many services to take advantage of this incredible hardware. There are no fully photoshop apps in the Android and there are still basically zero audio production apps either. Not everybody needs those kinds of pro-grade media services but those people also don’t need to spend 1100 dollars on a device that they’re probably just going to watch Netflix and play games on.

Apple iPad Pro

The speakers have been very good quality and considering the size, it does get fairly loud not as loud as other laptops out there, the microphones on the iPad are fantastic though. A small camera bump housing the standard and ultra-wide-angle lenses, you do have a power button and two volume rockers. At the top is the support for your Apple pencil and then you also have your one USB type-c slot and this is kind of a deal-breaker only having one USB slot when you’re trying to replace a laptop having to go out buy extra dongles for extra support if you want to connect something. Not only you are limited to the one USB-C slot, but it also doesn’t have Thunderbolt support. There is Bluetooth, so if you have wireless accessories such as a mouse or a keyboard that works just fine. It does have trackpad or mouse support on an iPad OS which is nice.

It’s actually pretty amazing. For example, there are things I want to do while watching a video sometimes. I like to leave the video and have it run while I’m on a desktop. In this when I’m gonna go back into Safari, it just pauses and it doesn’t keep going like it would on a desktop OS. I’m always having to go to Safari, so I’ve just started using Safari which has been okay. It was smooth, I didn’t really get any stuttering or lag. File management on iPad OS is just okay. It’s not as smooth as desktop experiences. You don’t have as much power as you would on a MacBook Pro.

Pending on the app developers sometimes support for the iPad app is very limited. This shows the mobile version of Instagram and fairly comical that Instagram hasn’t made an iPad app it’s almost embarrassing specifically because if you go to Instagram.com on your desktop, you can’t upload images. So, if I want to upload any images from my iPad, I do it through this tiny app, it’s kind of embarrassing and it forces you to use portrait mode.

When it does come to gaming, it’s kind of up to you to decide if you want afterward to play or if you want to be on a laptop like windows where you potentially play higher-end games if you have a GPU that supports them. For example, you can’t play Fortnight in 120 FPS which is kind of nice out of the App Store and that is the full Fortnight game. If you’re a touchscreen gamer or you can sync up a Bluetooth controller and play with a controller. There are games that you can plan and find any AR games that you really pulled me in, however, there are some cool AR apps including IKEA. So, there are some uses to augmented reality on your iPad but it doesn’t really take full advantage of that LiDar technology.

With such a larger tablet, I do like to use it horizontally most of the time similar to I would with a laptop display. However, the design language is definitely geared towards using it as a tablet in portrait mode because the camera is up towards the top, when you have it horizontally and you’re holding it, you’re gonna block the camera on the left side. It makes some problems with unlocking and taking videos. Aside from that placement of the camera, the front-facing camera quality is fairly good it’s better than Macbook Pro and the microphones are excellent. There is portrait mode to the front-facing camera, so you can take selfies with portrait mode but if you do actually want to take portrait mode shots with the rear cameras, unfortunately, you can’t. If you do want to take some photos you do have your 1X and they added an ultra-wide-angle lens which is pretty nice that they added that as a feature of functionality. You can zoom in up to 5x but that is of course just digital zoom from the 1X.

With iPad OS, it does have split-screen and multitasking capabilities. So, when you do actually swipe up and pause, there are multiple apps as opposed to maybe just a couple that you can choose from. So, it’s nice that they’ve added more. However, there’s also another feature so from the dock, you can press and hold and drag an app and you can swipe it over for a split-screen view and you can customize where you want the app size to be. In Safari, if we want to go ahead and just throw the Files app up, it opens up in a smaller version of that app just a little more slimmed down which is nice to have. It is compatible only in some of the apps. You have multiple options for multitasking, not quite as good as other desktop options but it is there.

ACCESSORIES:

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus

Keep in mind that while the S Pen comes included in the box, you’re gonna have to pay another 230 dollars for the keyboard accessory for the Tab S7 Plus which I think is really a must-have accessory to fully take advantage of the Tab S7 Plus potential.

The keyboard accessory attaches to the Tab S7 Plus magnetically and so does the back cover that comes with it which features an adjustable hinge that can hold its position at basically any angle. This is great for using the Tab S7 Plus docked on a flat surface like a desk but it’s still not great for positioning on uneven surfaces if you want something you can use on your lap, you should probably still look at a laptop.

Apple iPad Pro

Using our mouse isn’t as precise as I really want it to be. I think a trackpad will be much better. The Apple pencil is fairly premium, it’s comfortable the whole overtime. It’s very useful, it feels very real but the biggest use I got out of it was writing notes. You can also use it as a stylus overall browsing through the iPad using different things.

One thing that I have a complaint about is when I connect to do a Bluetooth keyboard and I swipe down, you have no option to actually load up a touchscreen keyboard. The point I’m trying to get to is, this is not going to be able to replace MacBook Pro overall. It might if you’re not doing things such as video editing but even with the lack of a full desktop web browsing experience, it’s just still constrained to a tablet. With all of that being said, this is an amazing tablet. If you’re going to use it as a tablet, I think 12.9 inches is a little bit too large but you will really enjoy using it as a tablet.

WHICH TO BUY?

In this review, you can understand that both the tablets cannot fully replace the laptop but you can use it as a laptop option or alternative. I think the Tab S7 Plus is a really great Android tablet and it’s by far the best android tablet on the market. In the OS system, the iPad Pro is the best tablet to buy and you can also use it as a Macbook but it will not be a great alternative to Macbook Pro. You should get one in between these like which one suits you more and your budget.

Expert Reviews of Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 Plus:

By Engadget
As a tablet, the S7+ shines. It has a big, beautiful 120hz display that’s great for watching videos or sketching on, and the useful S Pen is included. But as a laptop stand-in, the Tab S7+ struggles due to software that’s inconsistent and unintuitive. Still, if you don’t expect it to fully replace your PC, the Tab S7+ is a capable machine.

By GSM Arena
The Galaxy Tab S7+ is an excellent tablet and it receives a warm recommendation from us. It has the best screen around and is a real powerhouse. The Tab S7+ also features one of the most versatile implementations of the Android OS we’ve seen, enhanced with the power of S-Pen at that.

By Pocket-lint
Android tablets don’t get better than this. But do you really need all this power in such a form factor? And why isn’t the screen Ultra-HD 4K for the best possible media experience? If all-powerful is on your lists of musts then you can’t go wrong, but there are some lingering questions and sensible alternatives to ponder.

By Laptopmag
With a larger display, new S Pen, improved Book Cover keyboard and 5G support, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7 Plus are compelling iPad alternatives.

By Theverge
But when you’re spending over a thousand dollars on a tablet and keyboard, it’s reasonable to expect more than just an excellent movie watching experience, and that’s once again where Samsung’s tablets fall short.

Expert Reviews of Apple iPad Pro:

The new Magic Keyboard turns the iPad Pro into almost the perfect laptop replacement but there are still some gaps to fill.

By Techadvisor
Apple’s new 12.9in iPad Pro is among the most powerful on the market right now, with the new A12Z chipset beating just about every competitor in benchmark tests, but it’s also one of the most expensive options in our chart. The huge 120Hz 12.9in display is great for graphics design, watching movies and browsing social media, but it’s not until you pair it with the Magic Keyboard that the potential becomes clear.

By Macworld
The 2020 iPad Pro is a fantastic tablet, although you’ll find most of its improvements over the previous model in the camera array. This model now has a 10MP ultra-wide lens and a LiDAR sensor for augmented reality—both of which seem like they’d see little use on a tablet.

By Engadget
The 2020 iPad Pro is a terrific tablet that, thanks to features like trackpad support and some under-the-hood tweaks, comes closer than ever to feeling like a traditional computer. It doesn’t quite get there because of some inherent iPadOS limitations, but there’s enough performance and flexibility here that I’ve largely been able to leave my laptop to the side.

By Wired
This support of a trackpad and mouse pushes the iPad Pro even closer to “computer” territory. But that’s a debate for later. As much as I’ve used the iPad over the past five days, there were plenty of things I couldn’t test—like how the microphones fared in crowded, noisy environments, or how well the ultra-wide rear camera captured photos of large groups of friends.
